Founded in 2024, the Society brings together real-world EU experiences—policy competitions, political simulations, and dialogue with institutions—into a single, ambitious platform. We equip globally-minded students with the tools to lead in

diplomacy, governance, and European affairs. Initiated by Jakub Mirkowski, who served as the Society’s first Chair, and developed under the academic guidance of Professor Małgorzata Molęda-Zdziech, with Monika Wrona as Vice-Chair, the Society now unites a network of future leaders shaping policy, advancing debate, and forging international cooperation. We believe in the power of European integration and cross-cultural understanding—and we act on it.

🌍🏙️ The third session of the European Climate Policy Lab is behind us! 💚🇪🇺

On May 28, we continued our webinar series, this time shifting our focus directly to the local level. Our guest and guide through the world of sustainable urban transformation was Prof. Edoardo Croci, Director of the SUR Lab (Sustainable Urban Regeneration Lab) at Bocconi University in Milan. 🎙️🏫🌱

Together, we looked at cities, which on one hand generate as much as 80% of global GDP, and on the other – stand on the frontline of the fight against climate change. It is within the urban fabric that the challenges of adapting to extreme weather events, social justice, and technological innovations intersect most intensely. 📊💥⛈️

The discussion showed that green urban regeneration is not just a matter of planting trees, but a complex managerial, financial, and social process. During an extremely dynamic Q&A session, participants challenged our expert with highly insightful and thought-provoking questions, including:

💬 Is the "sponge city" concept fully applicable to historical European city centers, where ancient streets and heritage buildings prevent digging deep underground for water storage?
💬 How can we convince private capital to fund climate resilience infrastructure (like adapting to extreme heat), when investors expect fast returns and adaptation feels more like a cost than a profit-making project?
💬 What separates meaningful, realistic long-term climate planning for 2030 or 2050 from political branding or “greenwashing”?
💬 Do revolutionary urban models like Barcelona’s "superblocks" or Paris’s "15-minute city" drive gentrification and push long-term, lower-income residents out of historical centers?
💬 How do we handle the social backlash against Low Emission Zones (L*Z), where lower-income drivers who cannot afford electric cars feel unfairly excluded?
💬 Are Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence actually being used in practice for urban planning, or is it still just a vision of the future?

🌍⚡ The second session of the European Climate Policy Lab is behind us! 💚🇪🇺

On Thursday, May 14, we continued our webinar series with an insightful discussion on the future of the European Green Deal, energy policy, and Europe’s competitiveness, led by Prof. Honorata Nyga-Łukaszewska. 🎙️🔋

Together, we explored how Europe can continue its green transition in a world shaped by energy crises, geopolitical tensions, high electricity prices, and growing competition from the United States and China. 🌱🏭🌐

The session showed that climate policy today cannot be discussed only as an environmental issue. It is also about energy security, industrial policy, social justice, and Europe’s place in the global economy. ⚖️⚡📊

During the Q&A, participants asked many important and very practical questions, including:

💬 Has EU climate policy changed permanently after the energy crisis, or was it only a temporary reaction?
💬 How can the EU make sure that the green transition does not create new inequalities between richer and poorer Member States?
💬 How should the European Union balance ambitious climate goals with the need to keep energy affordable for citizens?
💬 What role should Central and Eastern European countries play in shaping the next phase of European climate and energy policy?
💬 Should the EU do less on climate if China is still responsible for such a large share of global pollution?
💬 If cheap clean power is supposed to be the new industrial policy, why is energy still so expensive in Europe?

This was the second session of the European Climate Policy Lab. We look forward to continuing the conversation in the next webinar on the role of cities in climate governance. 🇪🇺🌆🌱

Yesterday in Aachen, UkrainEU was officially recognised as the Polish national winner of the European Charlemagne Youth Prize 2026. 🇪🇺🇵🇱🇺🇦 During the award ceremony, UkrainEU was represented by Jakub Mirkowski.

The European Charlemagne Youth Prize, organised by the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen, recognises outstanding youth-led initiatives strengthening European cooperation, democracy, and dialogue among young people.

Over the past year, UkrainEU brought together young people from Poland and Ukraine through the Model European Union Warsaw simulation, educational workshops, and a Polish–Ukrainian academic exchange organised together with Kyiv School of Economics. 🇪🇺

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to dr Iryna Degtyarova, prof. Małgorzata Molęda-Zdziech, Victoriya Hermanchuk, and Kyiv School of Economics for their support, trust, and collaboration throughout this journey.

This award belongs to the entire community that helped make UkrainEU possible! 💙💛

Malgorzata Moleda-ZdziechDzień Europy: Dziedzictwo Planu Schumana 🇪🇺

9 maja to data szczególna – rocznica ogłoszenia Deklaracji Schumana z 1950 roku, która położyła kamień węgielny pod proces integracji europejskiej.

Na czym polegał fenomen tego planu?
Robert Schuman zaproponował rewolucyjną na tamte czasy koncepcję: poddanie francusko-niemieckiej produkcji węgla i stali wspólnej, ponadnarodowej kontroli. Cel był strategiczny – uniemożliwienie ponownego wyścigu zbrojeń. Dzięki ścisłej współpracy gospodarczej w sektorach kluczowych dla przemysłu wojennego, konflikt zbrojny między europejskimi narodami stał się nie tylko nie do pomyślenia, ale fizycznie niemożliwy.

Współczesne znaczenie 🕊️
To, co zaczęło się od wspólnoty surowcowej, ewoluowało w unikalny projekt polityczny, gwarantujący nam dekady pokoju, stabilności oraz swobodę przepływu osób, kapitału i usług. Dzisiejsze święto to wyraz uznania dla odwagi dyplomatycznej, która przekształciła kontynent naznaczony konfliktami w przestrzeń dialogu i wspólnych wartości.

Doceniajmy fundamenty, na których zbudowano naszą dzisiejszą rzeczywistość. 🤝

🌍✨ The first session of the European Climate Policy Lab is behind us! 💚

On Thursday, May 7, we launched our webinar series with an inspiring discussion on climate disinformation and public debate, led by Justyna Ignaszak. 🎙️🧠

Together, we explored why climate disinformation matters, how harmful narratives spread online, and why false or misleading content can weaken trust in science, polarise public debate, and slow down climate action. 🌱⚠️📲

The discussion also showed how engaged young people are in this topic. During the Q&A, participants asked many important questions, including:

💬 Are young people or older people more prone to believing disinformation online?
💬 Can people who support climate policies still be fooled by climate misinformation?
💬 Who should be responsible for fighting disinformation - platforms, governments, the EU, NGOs, or citizens?
💬 Will AI help us identify fake news, or will it make the problem worse?
💬 Should climate education in schools be mandatory?
💬 Are tools such as community notes effective if they are written by users rather than experts?

One of the key takeaways from the session was that fighting disinformation is not only about correcting false claims. ✅ It is also about building critical thinking, asking better questions, checking sources, and becoming more conscious consumers and producers of information. 🔍🧩💡

This was only the beginning of the European Climate Policy Lab. We look forward to continuing the conversation in the next sessions on the future of the European Green Deal and the role of cities in climate governance. 🇪🇺🌆🌱

What does it take to design cities that are truly sustainable, resilient, and future-ready? 🌆🌱

We are proud to introduce Edoardo Croci as one of the speakers of the European Climate Policy Lab!

Professor of Practice at Bocconi University, where he is Director of the Sustainable Urban Regeneration Lab, Senior Research Fellow at GREEN (Centre for Geography, Resources, Environment, Energy and Networks), and coordinator of the “Green Economy Observatory” and the “Smart City Observatory”.

Scientific coordinator for Bocconi of several Horizon projects, related to climate, nature-based solutions, circular economy. 🎓💬 His work links research, policy, and practice, focusing on the design and assessment of integrated strategies for urban sustainability, climate resilience, mobility, and energy transition.

He regularly acts as a consultant for several UN agencies and the European Commission on these topics. He is also President of Italia Nostra NGO. He served as Milan Deputy Mayor for Mobility, Transport and Environment and Chair of UERA (Urban Europe Research Alliance).

We are proud to introduce Justyna Ignaszak as one of the speakers of the European Climate Policy Lab! 🌍⚡

Justyna is a PhD candidate at the SGH Doctoral School, where she researches the role of climate disinformation in shaping public attitudes and its impact on policymaking processes. Her work focuses on the mechanisms behind climate denialism and the communication challenges involved in addressing misleading narratives. 🌱🧠📊

Professionally, she is a Program Ex*****on Manager at TechSoup, coordinating the Digital Activism Program across more than 20 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, West Africa, South Africa, and South America. 🛡️📢🌿 Through her work, she supports civil society organizations in building information resilience, strengthening media literacy, and countering harmful narratives, including those related to climate change.

She is also a graduate of the Intercollegiate Climate Academy (SGH Warsaw School of Economics , AGH, University of Wrocław) and a European Climate Pact Ambassador, combining research, practice, and education in her engagement with climate policy. 🎯

What does it take to inspire the next generation of Europeans? 🇪🇺✨

We’re continuing our series where organisers and participants of UkrainEU share their reflections, insights, and behind-the-scenes moments.

🏆 UkrainEU is a national winner of the European Charlemagne Youth Prize 2026, awarded by the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen.

Beyond university-level activities, the project also reached younger audiences. Through a series of interactive workshops, the European Union Society engaged around 100 high school students, introducing them to the core values of the European Union and Ukraine’s path towards membership.
