🎉15 YEARS OF KNOF! 🎉

The exam season is coming, but big milestones deserve a proper celebration. Join us tomorrow (9th of June) at 18:00 to celebrate our 15th birthday with past members and former board of KNOF!

Come for some chatting about KNOF’s future with our guests, networking and swapping stories, stay for the birthday cake and lazy volleyball play at Pole Mokotowskie afterwards! 🍰

📍Where to find us? We’ll meet in room B2.38 first, before heading to the park.

Clear your Tuesday evening schedule and come hang out. See you there!

🚨 Our next speaker for MiniModes 2026 is Monika Wolff! 🧠

Monika specializes in improving team performance by integrating diverse working and communication styles, with a dedicated focus on neuroinclusivity. By combining her academic training as a physicist and extensive organizational development experience she developed her unique, system-based approach, enabling solving complex interpersonal problems to find the most optimized solutions in the working environment.

Monika earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics from Leibniz University of Hannover, specializing in optics. After graduating, she transitioned into the business sector, where she held such roles as a project manager, business analyst and change coach. Currently, she integrates her interpersonal skills and analytical background by leading her company, Flow by Wolff, which helps organizations build high-performing and well-balanced teams driven by neuroinclusivity.

In her session, "Different Minds, Better Teams. How Neurodiversity Becomes a Strength in Science and Corporate Work," she will explore what changes when scientists move into corporate or interdisciplinary environments. Participants will learn how neurodiverse teams can work more successfully by making thinking visible, separating idea generation from evaluation, and designing collaboration around different cognitive and regulatory needs.

🚨 The next speaker for MiniModes 2026 is Dr. Łukasz Sterczewski! 🔬

Dr. Łukasz Sterczewski is an Associate Professor at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Wroclaw Tech), Poland, specializing in lasers and spectroscopic techniques in the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) ranges.

Drawing on extensive experience from renowned institutions including Princeton, Caltech, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Dr. Sterczewski now serves as a research group leader at Wroclaw Tech. He currently leads a groundbreaking project on broadband, chip-based terahertz spectroscopy, funded by a prestigious ERC Starting Grant.

By bridging the fields of electronics and optics, his work drives innovation across a diverse spectrum of applications, from advanced medical diagnostics to the search of organic molecules in space. Even beyond the laboratory, he is a dedicated advocate for the advancement of Polish science.

🚨Meet our first speaker for MiniModes 2026: Dr. Tatevik Chalyan! 🔬

We are honored to have Dr. Chalyan kick off our speaker lineup with her talk titled: "Sensing and microscopy: from bio to quantum"

She is a postdoctoral researcher at the Brussels Photonics Team (B-PHOT), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. Originally from Armenia, she obtained her Master's in Physics from Yerevan State University and her European Doctorate in Physics from the University of Trento, Italy.

With experience in both academia and industry – including work as a laser engineer – her research spans photonics-based biosensors, Raman spectroscopy, laser engineering, and quantum photonics.

Recently she has focused on quantum squeezing applications for gravitational wave detection as part of the Einstein Telescope team developing a quantum squeezer at 2090 nm wavelength. Alongside her research, she actively organizes conferences and workshops and mentors student chapters internationally.

💡 Today, May 16, we celebrate the International Day of Light!

✨To mark this occasion, join us on Monday, May 18 at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw. From 13:00 to 17:00, you will be able to visit our stand at FUW, play Khet or see some optical experiments. 👀

It will also be a great opportunity to talk with us about KNOF, our initiatives, and how to get involved in our society.

This date commemorates the first successful operation of the laser by Theodore Maiman in 1960, a breakthrough that helped shape modern optics, photonics, and many technologies we use every day.

As the Optica SPIE EPS IEEE Student Chapter at the University of Warsaw, we are proud to join the global celebration of light and to continue developing our student community in cooperation with OPTICA.

Come by, meet us, and get enLIGHTened! 🔬✨

🗓️ On March 12, we hosted our first-ever SpeedLab networking event! The idea was to create a space where students and research group leaders could meet and talk in person.

🔬 We know that finding the right research group is key to making the most of your time at university. Unfortunately, this process is usually tedious and too often left to chance.

To address this, we brought together representatives from various optics and photonics research groups in one place. After brief presentations, participants had the opportunity to speak with them one-on-one in a format similar to speed friending.

🎓 We hope the event gave students an overview of what our university has to offer in our field and helped them find groups that suit them best. We’re planning to organize events like this once or twice a year, so stay tuned for the next one! ✨
