YPEF Young People in European Forests

YPEF Young People in European Forests The international contest „Young People in European Forests” Fourth Edition is addressed to youth from European countries, aged 13-19

The YPEF contest is aimed at broadening the knowledge about European forests in particular considering Natura 2000 sites, as well as at the promotion of knowledge about biological diversity of European nature and sustainable development in forestry. YPEF reaches thousands of pupils in Europe through partner organizations. Partner organizations are the key institutions in their country representing

Dear All!

on behalf of the Forest’s Friends Society (TPL) and the Faculty of Forestry of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW, we invite you to participate in the 2022 edition of YPEF International Competition “Young People in European Forests”.

Our competition this year will not have an international final due war in Ukraine. We do not want to move the final to another country. We dedicate this decision to our friends from Ukraine.

However, we would like not to stop despite troublesome times. Individual national committees of the competition will decide individually whether and in what form to organize this edition. The Polish Committee decided that the competition would be held on the rules of the first stage of the previous year.

A team of three (people aged 15-19) prepares a presentation in English (without interference from outside the team) on "Urban forests".

A multimedia presentation or a film (photos, graphics, films, with text annotation, maximum 15-20 slides) should be made in .ppt, .pdf, .pptx or recorded movie format. The maximum size of the work is not limited when it is placed in the cloud. At the end of the presentation, two additional slides should be placed: one with the list of source materials with their authors, the other with the data of the authors of the presentation (authors’ names, school name and class attended by the authors). Such information should also be included in the video.

Assessment (apart from the substantive side of the presentation) will include the personal involvement of the authors in the work (it is worth specifying who handled what), the originality of the idea and the quality of ex*****on. It is not enough to duplicate the information available on the web.

Submit your work

The teacher-coordinator sends by separate e-mail each multimedia presentation, film or link enabling the work to be downloaded (from disk, cloud, etc.) along with data about the school and participants. Attachments sent by e-mail cannot be larger than 20MB. Please send the Competition Committee to the following address: [email protected]

We are waiting for the presentations until midnight of June 19, 2022.

Assessment of works

The national committee of the YPEF will evaluate the submitted works and will select the best one, the authors of which will be the winners of this unique edition of the competition. The Commission reserves the right to classify presentations, and therefore the number of awards, depending on the level of submitted works.

Information about the competition can be obtained from:

Friends and Supporters of our YPEF competition!
We know that you are waiting for the next edition to be announced and your patience will soon be awarded.
We also know that the time of war in Ukraine is not a good time to organise our competition and especially the European final, which was scheduled to take place in Ukraine. We also do not want to take this honour away from our Ukrainian friends and move the final to another country.
This is why we are proposing this solution:
- each of the national committees can organise the competition in their country, based on a common booklet (or another traditional form) remotely or not;
- we do not organise the European final in 2022, dedicating this decision to our friends from brave Ukraine.
We deeply believe that the next edition can be organised in the Europe of Peace.
On behalf of the YPEF International Committee

YPEF 2021 in Poland - results of the evaluation of the teams' work

After reviewing the works submitted to the competition, we would like to congratulate all participants. You have made very interesting presentations and films about old trees and old forests, their role in the environment, biodiversity, and the deadwood supply. Bravo!
We are impressed by your commitment and creativity!

Therefore, we have decided to award you all with the title of laureates of this edition of the competition in Poland.

We would like to honour the work which received the highest marks. It is the work of the team from the Szkoła Mistrzostwa Sportowego Bielsko Bialskiego Towarzystwa Sportowego "Podbeskidzie".
This will be reflected in the diplomas sent to you next few days!

Dear Friends of Forests and the YPEF Competition,

we have waited a long time for the most updated news from the national committees of the countries participating in our competition. Unfortunately, the pandemic situation will not allow us to organise the European final this year. However, we do not want to interrupt the competition cycle and we create the possibility to organise YPEF competitions at the level of those countries that want to organise such a stage.

We agreed that the teams winning the national stages in 2021 will be treated as finalists of this edition of the competition and maybe even – they will be able to take part in the 2022 finals (probably in Ukraine) together with the finalists of the next edition. We encourage the national committees to conduct the competitions according to the rules used so far or the rules modified during this exceptional time. Seek information from the organisers!

May spring give us all hope and the forest give us health!

World Soil Day (5 December) - the protection of soil biodiversity, we present an educational film which is part of the Soil Life in Action project (© Wim van Egmond 2017)
See how soil fauna influences the mixing of plant residues in soils and sediments through its biotic activity. It stimulates decomposition, creates habitats, increases gas and water flow through the soil. Look at the system without (left) and with soil fauna (right) within 15 weeks. The left sample contains only mycoflora, which also promotes mineralization processes. The leaf layer on the right side is almost completely decomposed and enters the humus accumulation layer due to the interaction between microorganisms, microfauna, and soil mesophila.
All this happens in the litter of our forests... and not just that.
(The movie can be used for education. For other use please contact us. egmond(at)tip.nl)
