The Digital Product Passport: A new chapter in EU product compliance

Product compliance is evolving. Across the European Union, access to reliable product information is becoming increasingly important - and the Digital Product Passport (DPP) is set to play a key role in this transformation.
Introduced under the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and other relevant legislation, the DPP aims to make product information more accessible and improve transparency, traceability, repair, reuse and recycling.

What does this mean for businesses?

🔋 Batteries are among the first. From 18 February 2027, a Digital Battery Passport will be required for certain categories, including electric vehicle batteries, light means of transport batteries and industrial batteries with a capacity above 2 kWh.

📋 More product groups are expected to follow. The specific requirements and timelines will depend on the applicable EU legislation.

🔎 Preparation starts with information. Businesses should understand which rules apply to their products and assess whether their product data and internal processes are ready for upcoming requirements.

EPR compliance is not something to think about after entering a new market.
It should be part of the market-entry strategy from the beginning.

When expanding into a new European market, companies usually focus on the obvious questions:
Where will we sell?
Who are our customers?
How will we distribute the products?

But there is another question that is often left until the last minute:
What environmental obligations will apply to our products in this market?

The answer can affect much more than registration itself.
Product classification.
EPR schemes.
Reporting requirements.
Packaging obligations.
WEEE and battery responsibilities.
Local representatives and compliance partners.

And the earlier these requirements are identified, the easier it is to build them into your market-entry process - rather than deal with them when the products are already on the market.

At AR EUROPE, we help companies understand and manage environmental compliance requirements across European markets - before compliance becomes a problem.

EPR compliance across Europe: Are you prepared for the differences?

Expanding into new European markets means navigating different environmental regulations, product classifications and reporting requirements. Rules that apply in one country cannot automatically be applied in another - and the differences can be greater than you might expect.

Let’s look at a few examples:

Poland: Electrical and electronic equipment is divided into 7 categories, while batteries and accumulators fall into 3 categories.

Czech Republic: The classification includes as many as 175 types of electrical and electronic equipment and 32 types of batteries and accumulators.

Slovakia: The classification includes 29 types of electrical and electronic equipment and 3 battery categories.

These differences show why understanding local EPR requirements is essential when placing products on multiple European markets. Correct classification, up-to-date regulatory knowledge and country-specific compliance procedures can help businesses avoid mistakes and fulfil their obligations.

Think your EPR obligations are covered because your packaging is registered?

Packaging is only one part of the EPR landscape.

Depending on what you sell and where you operate, your business may also need to consider other product categories, such as:

♻️ WEEE - electrical and electronic equipment
🔋 Batteries
📦 Packaging
👕 Textiles
And other product categories

And this is where things can become complicated.

A company may correctly handle its packaging obligations while overlooking another EPR stream connected to the products it sells.
For businesses operating across Europe, it is therefore not enough to ask:
“Are we registered for EPR?”

A better question is:
“Have we identified all the EPR obligations that apply to our products and markets?”

Requirements can vary depending on the country, product category and way the product is placed on the market.

That can mean different registration systems, reporting requirements, environmental fees and compliance organisations.

A simple first step:
Look at the complete product - not just the packaging.

What is the product?
Where is it sold?
How is it placed on the market?
Does it contain or come with components that may fall under another EPR scheme?

Understanding the full picture can help businesses identify potential gaps before they become a problem.

At AR EUROPE, we help companies navigate EPR requirements across European markets and understand which obligations may apply to their products.

One product. Multiple responsibilities.

PPWR is changing the way businesses need to think about packaging.

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is bringing new requirements for businesses placing packaging on the European market.

One area worth paying attention to is the digital identification of packaging linked to EPR schemes.

From 12 February 2027, where packaging covered by an EPR scheme is identified, the PPWR provides for the use of a corresponding symbol in a QR code or another standardised, open digital marking technology.

For businesses, this means that packaging compliance is becoming increasingly connected with the actual packaging design and product information.

And that is something worth considering early.

If your company regularly creates new packaging artwork or works with long production cycles, upcoming regulatory requirements may need to be taken into account before the next packaging order is placed.

What can businesses do now?

🔎 Review your current EPR obligations
Check which markets and packaging categories are relevant to your business.

📦 Look at your packaging portfolio
Identify the products and packaging formats that may be affected by upcoming requirements.

🖨️ Include compliance in your packaging planning
When preparing new artwork or planning the next production run, consider regulatory requirements alongside design and technical specifications.

The PPWR introduces a broader set of changes for packaging placed on the European market.

Understanding these changes early can help businesses prepare their processes before new requirements become part of everyday operations.

At AR EUROPE, we support businesses with EPR compliance across European markets - from registration and reporting to navigating changing environmental requirements.

ExpertON - Meet Magdalena Augustis: international markets, cultural differences and environmental compliance

We continue our ExpertON series - introducing the people behind AR EUROPE and the experience they bring to our work with clients across Europe.

This time, meet Magdalena Augustis, a specialist in environmental consulting, who works with companies entering new markets and helps them navigate environmental compliance requirements across Europe.

Let’s get to know Magdalena and her perspective:

1. What do you do at AR EUROPE?

I work in environmental consulting, with a focus on international markets.

I support clients who are entering new markets by helping them with registration, understanding environmental requirements and reporting.

I have also spent many months supporting companies from different parts of the world with placing their products on the European market. It was a valuable professional and cultural experience that taught me how differently businesses can approach the same challenges.

My daily work also involves documentation, reporting and keeping environmental compliance processes up to date.

My professional career has been connected with environmental protection and legislation for many years, both at national and European level.

2. Working with clients - just a job, or something more?

For me, it is definitely something more.

I have worked in environmental protection for many years. I started my career in a waste management facility, later worked on developing and implementing software for such facilities, and today I can use that experience in environmental consulting.

Working with clients - especially international clients - is not only about regulations.

It is also about understanding different cultures, languages, ways of working and expectations.

That can be challenging, but it is also one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Sometimes, we are the client's main point of reference when they enter a new market. In those situations, our role is to make the process as clear and smooth as possible.

3. Special topic: entering a new European market - what should businesses pay attention to?

One of the biggest challenges for companies expanding internationally is understanding that environmental requirements can vary from one country to another.

The obligations may depend on the type of product, the market and the way the product is placed on the market.

A company entering a new country may need to consider registration, reporting, environmental fees and cooperation with local compliance organisations or representatives.

The earlier these requirements are identified, the easier it is to prepare for the new market and avoid unnecessary complications later.

That is why environmental compliance should be considered before entering a new market - not after the products are already being sold.

Expanding into a new European market? Start with these 3 questions.

When entering a new market, businesses usually focus on customers, pricing, logistics and sales.

Environmental compliance is often considered later.

Before launching your products in another European country, it is worth asking:

1. Where are we selling?
EPR requirements can differ from one European country to another.

2. What are we selling?
Different product categories may involve different environmental obligations — from packaging and electrical equipment to batteries and other regulated products.

3. How are we selling?
Your obligations may depend not only on the product itself, but also on how and where it is placed on the market.

These questions may seem simple, but answering them early can help businesses avoid unnecessary complications when expanding internationally.

At AR EUROPE, we help businesses understand their environmental compliance requirements when entering European markets.

Introducing ExpertON – meet the people behind AR EUROPE.

Behind every successful solution, there are people.

Through EXPERTON, we’d like to introduce you to the people behind AR EUROPE - the experts and professionals whose knowledge, experience and daily work help businesses navigate environmental compliance across Europe.

They’ll share their perspectives on working with clients, the challenges businesses face and the experiences they’ve gained throughout their careers.

Because behind regulations, processes and compliance solutions, there are always people working to make complex matters clearer and easier to manage.

For the first edition of ExpertON, meet Ignacy Kaźmierczak.

Let’s get to know his perspective.

1. What is your role and what do you do on a daily basis?

I work with business partners and support them in navigating their environmental obligations related to the products they place on the market.

My role involves building and developing long-term relationships, understanding each client's needs and helping them find practical solutions when it comes to environmental compliance.

I work with businesses dealing with different product categories, including electrical and electronic equipment, packaging, batteries and other products covered by EPR requirements.

My goal is to make the entire process as clear, smooth and manageable as possible for the client.

2. Working with clients - a job or a mission? How do you see it?

At first, for many people, it’s simply about everyday responsibilities: emails, meetings, sales targets and tasks to complete. That’s how I started too.

But over time, your perspective can change.

Working with clients is ultimately about working with people - their needs, expectations and sometimes their concerns. Very often, we become the link between a problem and a solution. And when we approach that with empathy and genuine commitment, we’re not just providing a service - we’re building trust.

Over time, you begin to notice those moments when you have genuinely helped someone. And that can bring enormous satisfaction.

For some, it will always be simply a job. For others, it can become something more. It all depends on your approach, your values and what you choose to see in your work.

3. What is one of the biggest challenges businesses face when it comes to EPR?

One of the biggest challenges is understanding that environmental compliance can be much more complex than it initially appears.

For businesses operating internationally, the challenge can become even greater, as requirements may vary depending on the country, the products placed on the market and the way the business operates.

That's why understanding your obligations early is so important. The earlier a business identifies what may apply to them, the easier it is to prepare, organise the necessary processes and avoid unnecessary complications later.

In my experience, good cooperation starts with understanding the client's business and looking at their individual situation rather than searching for one universal solution.

Because when it comes to EPR, the right approach often starts with asking the right questions.

EPR is part of your product's journey.

A product's journey doesn't begin and end with its sale.

Before it reaches the customer, it is manufactured, imported, packaged and placed on the market. After it has been used, it may enter a collection, recycling or recovery system.

Extended Producer Responsibility connects these different stages.

The idea behind EPR is that businesses placing certain products on the market can have responsibilities linked to what happens to those products once they reach the end of their useful life.

This may involve supporting systems for:

♻️ the collection and treatment of electrical and electronic equipment,
🔋 the collection and recycling of batteries,
📦 the management and recycling of packaging waste.

For businesses, this means that environmental responsibility can extend beyond the moment a product is sold.

Depending on the country, the product category and the way a product is placed on the market, different obligations may apply.

That's why EPR is an important part of the product journey - from the moment it enters the market to what happens after it is no longer used.

The size of your company may not matter as much as you think.

When it comes to EPR compliance, obligations are often determined by the products you place on the market - not by the number of employees or annual turnover.

Many businesses assume that EPR requirements only apply to large manufacturers. In reality, importers, brand owners and e-commerce sellers may also be subject to EPR obligations, depending on the products they sell and the markets they operate in.

Whether you're placing electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, packaged products or other regulated goods on the market, it's important to understand your responsibilities before expanding into a new country.

Understanding your obligations early can help avoid compliance issues and make international growth smoother and more predictable.

At AR EUROPE, we help businesses navigate EPR requirements across Europe with confidence.
