We are pleased to inform that Dr. Ekaterina Rets from the Department of Polar and Marine Research IG PAS is a co-author of the paper "DCG-MIP: the Debris-Covered Glacier melt Model Intercomparison exPeriment" published in "The Cryosphere".

Dr. Rets commented:

"This study is the first of its kind scientific community effort to compare and coordinate existing approaches to model ice melt under debris cover. This kind of work is a necessary step underlying advancement of Earth System and Hydrological models. The A-Melt model, that I'm working on, has shown good results and rather optimal trade off between model complexity and accuracy. But at the same time the experiment has shown us possible directions for improvement."

Debris cover on glaciers is a layer of rock fragments and other sediments accumulating on glacier surface during its life time, that is substantially changing glaciers' surface interaction with atmosphere and energy fluxes. Most of state-of-the-art Earth System and Hydrological models still do not take into account debris cover on glaciers, despite raising concerns that it might be a source of significant uncertainties, especially for future projections, as debris cover over glaciers is expected to grow with glaciers' shrinkage.
