Church Hurt Is Real — And Healing Is Possible
For many people, church is meant to be a place of hope, safety, and spiritual growth. Yet research shows that faith communities can sometimes also become places where deep wounds occur. This experience is often called church hurt or spiritual abuse.
Academic studies describe spiritual abuse as the misuse of spiritual authority that “weakens… a person’s spiritual empowerment.”
This can include manipulation, control, shame, exclusion, or betrayal by trusted leaders or community members.
Research also shows that harm within faith settings can affect emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being simultaneously. A recent systematic review found that abuse in religious contexts can create “complex spiritual, emotional and psychological” trauma that may impact identity, relationships, and long-term health.
Because it is deeply tied to identity and meaning, these wounds can be uniquely painful. When trust in both people and God is shaken, individuals may struggle with guilt, confusion, isolation, or loss of spiritual direction.
