WHEN NOBODY DIED… BUT YOU’RE STILL GRIEVING.
We usually think of grief as something that follows death.
But what if grief can also follow a life change?
You can grieve the home you had to leave.
The career you lost.
The body you used to have.
The children who grew up and no longer need you in the same way.
The friendships that quietly faded.
The dreams that never happened.
The freedom you once had.
The lifestyle you can no longer afford.
The version of yourself you thought you would become.
And,you don’t even call it grief.
You call it “I’m just tired.” Or “I’m not myself lately. “
We sometimes try to use a diffusion strategy by saying to yourself things like I should be grateful or others have it worse.
What we are experiencing is called ambiguous loss, a loss that may not have a funeral, a goodbye, or even a clear name. Yet your heart knows something has changed.
Healing can begin when we stop telling ourselves, “I shouldn’t feel this way,” and start asking:
“What am I really grieving?”
At Novus Foundation, we believe that understanding the human heart is part of learning how to walk with people through the places where life hurts, including the losses nobody else can see.
Sometimes grief doesn’t look like tears.
Sometimes it looks like wanting to be alone.
Sometimes it looks like irritability.
Sometimes it looks like exhaustion.
Sometimes it looks like longing for “the way things used to be.”
And sometimes…
grief is simply the heart learning how to live in a new reality.
💔What have you lost that you never realized you were grieving?
