In 1831, Poland's national poet stayed in this palace. Today trees grow through its staircase.

📍 Pudliszki, western Poland. A neoclassical palace built in 1823 for the Łubieński family. Adam Mickiewicz was a guest here, and the poet and painter Cyprian Kamil Norwid came twice. Between the wars the estate belonged to the Fenrych family, who built a modern farm and a cannery here. Poland's president Moscicki, a cardinal Hlond and a famous painter Kossak all visited.

Today the roof is failing, the building stands unsecured, and nature is taking over the staircase.

🇵🇱 HOW IT WORKS IN POLAND
A monument stays with its owner, together with the legal duty to look after it. When that does not happen, citizens' organisations like ours step in. In rescuing this palace, we will bring our requests to the heritage conservation authority, the building control office, the fire-safety inspectors, police and the local council, and press for the law to be applied until the building is secured.

We are a foundation active for over 30 years, and through our intervention programme we have already saved 12 monuments. It takes time, but we intend to rewrite the story of this palace.

👉 Follow this page to see how a Polish citizens' foundation takes on a ruined palace, and share the story if it moved you. If you would like to support our work, the link is in the first comment.

Can you put an ENTIRE VILLAGE on the heritage register?
In Poland, the answer is YES! 🇵🇱🏛️

Heritage conservation is not just about castles, palaces, or ancient ruins. Sometimes, it is about preserving an entire, living community's layout to save its unique historical story.

The Lower Silesian Provincial Conservator of Monuments has just made a groundbreaking, highly debated decision to register the complete rural layout and historical buildings of the village of Ostaszów.

What makes it so special?Ostaszów is a rare, intact example of a 1930s planned model colony village (Musterdorf). It features a perfectly preserved geometric layout:

🔸 A central square with a former community house
🔸 arranged farmsteads
🔸 A highly specific, historic division of fields

The Goal: To protect this architectural harmony from modern urban sprawl, mismatched contemporary developments, and the irreversible loss of its historic fabric.

The Challenge: As you can imagine, this historic move sparked huge debates and resistance among local residents, raising a universal heritage question: How do we balance strict legal protection with the daily lives of modern inhabitants?

How does your country handle the protection of entire historic towns or villages? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇

The Lower Silesian Provincial Conservator of Monuments has decided to place Ostaszów under strict conservation protection, recognising the village’s historic rural layout as unique within the region. The decision of 10 July 2026 brings the administrative proceedings to a close, but at the same ti...

How does heritage protection actually work in Poland?
It is a rigorous process, but one that faces severe challenges when private owners refuse to cooperate. 🏛️⚖️

A perfect example of this is the historic Podwilcze Palace (PL-West Pomeranian Voivodeship), which has been part of our ongoing intervention program.

In Poland, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like our Foundation act as watchdogs. However, enforcement relies on a legal framework managed by the state – specifically, the Regional Heritage Conservator (WUOZ).

Together with these officials, we carry out inspections to assess the condition of historical sites and issue mandatory conservation orders.

The Challenge:
The system is heavily tested when private property owners actively work against it. In the case of Podwilcze Palace, the owners managed to evade responsibility and exploit legal loopholes, blocking access to the property and preventing official inspections for over 5 years. During this time, they neglected crucial maintenance, leaving this beautiful monument to deteriorate.

Forcing an inspection under these circumstances requires months of persistent bureaucratic and legal efforts from our team. This recent breakthrough inspection is just the first step in holding the owners accountable and ensuring the physical security of the palace.

⚠️ NAJWAŻNIEJSZE ZALECENIA (Termin: do 30 września 2026 r.): Inspektorzy nakazali właścicielom podjęcie natychmiastowych kroków w trybie pilnym:
1️⃣ Zabezpieczenie połaci dachowych – aby chronić to, co jeszcze zostało z wnętrz i detali architektonicznych przed zalewaniem.
2️⃣ Usunięcie roślinności z murów – natychmiastowe wycięcie samosiejek niszczących strukturę dachu i rynien.
