🎉 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘄𝗮𝗹 𝗞𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘆𝗰𝘇𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘇𝗲

Po raz kolejny w Pałac Sobieszów odbył się Festiwal Klimatyczne Karkonosze. To coroczne wydarzenie, stworzone przez Karkonoski Park Narodowy, promujące lokalną kulturę, rękodzieło, a także przyrodę. Festiwal jest licznie odwiedzany przez miejscową społeczność, jak i turystów.

🌷 W tym roku mogliśmy przybliżyć ideę stojącą za Ogrodami dla Apollo. Architekt krajobrazu z naszego zespołu przedstawił odwiedzającym, dlaczego tak ważne jest tworzenie siedlisk dla motyli. Podzielił się także wskazówkami na utworzenie ogrodu przyjaznego motylom, i oczywiście, przyjaznego niepylakowi Apollo!

Festiwal zgromadził mnóstwo osób związanych z regionem, podkreślając nie tylko wyjątkowość lokalnego rzemiosła, ale również niezwykłego świata przyrody Karkonoszy i jego bioróżnorodności.

Jesteśmy ogromnie zadowoleni z rezultatu tegorocznego festiwalu i zainteresowania odwiedzających. Mamy nadzieję, że zobaczymy się znów za rok! 🫶

🎉 𝗞𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘆𝗰𝘇𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘇𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹
Once again, the Klimatyczne Karkonosze Festival, at Pałac Sobieszów took place. It’s an annual event, created by Karkonoski National Park, promoting local culture, craft and nature. It’s visited by many tourists, as well as local community.

🌷 This year, we’ve had the opportunity to promote the idea behind the Gardens for Apollo. Landscape expert from our Team taught the visitors about the importance of creating the habitats for butterflies and also shared some tips and tricks on establishing a butterfly-friendly (and of course Apollo butterfly friendly) garden!

The festival brought together a lot of people connected to the region, highlighting the uniqueness of not only the local craftmanship, but also the biodiversity and natural world of the Karkonosze Mountains.

We’re really content with the outcome of the festival and interest shown by the visitors. Hopefully, we will see you again next year! 🫶

🦋 How do you bring the Apollo butterfly closer to the public?

Our project partner, the Education and Information Centre White Carpathians (Vzdělávací a informační středisko Bílé Karpaty), joined two public events in Veselí nad Moravou, Czechia, with the LIFE Apollo2020 project.

At the stand, visitors (especially the younger ones) could discover the Apollo butterfly through playful hands-on activities. They learned about its characteristic red spots and the basic structure of a butterfly’s body, coloured their own butterfly badge or magnet, created new butterfly species by rolling a die, and even crawled through a model chrysalis. Adults could also learn more through informal talks and take a short break at the Apollo stand.

We are happy, that around 350 people found its way to us during these two events! 🙂

Ludzkie ręce i końskie kopyta ruszyły z pomocą dla niepylaka apollo! 🦋

🐎 W rezerwacie „Kruczy Kamień” rozpoczął się wypas koni i kolejny wolontariat LIFE_Apollo2020. Nasi wolontariusze ponownie pomagają chronić niepylaka – tym razem prowadząc zabiegi związane z utrzymaniem jego siedlisk. Ekipa nietypowa, ale jakże skuteczna!

Wspólnie usuwają zarastającą roślinność i pomagają przywracać otwarte, ciepłolubne siedliska, które są niezbędne dla przetrwania niepylaka i wielu innych gatunków.

Przez najbliższe tygodnie konie ze Stajni Rajdowej Chełmsko Śląskie będą pomagały w utrzymaniu cennych łąk i muraw. Ich wsparcie pozwala nam połączyć doświadczenie tradycyjnych metod gospodarowania z potrzebami współczesnej ochrony przyrody.

🐴 Kruczy Kamień można oczywiście odwiedzać, ale prosimy, nie dokarmiajcie koni. Są tutaj w pracy! W przypadku wolontariuszy nie będziemy się wtrącać 😉

It takes a team – and this one has two legs and four! 🐎

🦋 Grazing has begun at the “Kruczy Kamień” nature reserve – and so has another LIFE Apollo2020 volunteer programme. Our volunteers are once again helping to protect the Apollo butterfly, this time by actively managing its habitat. It’s an unusual team, but a very effective one!

Together, they are clearing overgrown vegetation and restoring the open, warm habitats that are essential for the survival of the Apollo butterfly and many other species.

Over the next few weeks, horses from Stajnia Rajdowa Chełmsko Śląskie will help keep these valuable meadows and grasslands open. Their work allows us to combine traditional grazing with modern nature conservation – showing how traditional land management can still play an important role in protecting nature today.

🐴 Kruczy Kamień is, of course, open to visitors, but please don’t feed the horses. They’re here to work! As for the volunteers, we won’t interfere 😉

🦋Breeders meeting in Karkonosze National Park

Our LIFE Apollo2020 Team from Karkonoski Park Narodowy had the pleasure to host breeders meeting, with guests from Pieniński Park Narodowy, Pieninský národný park and an independent invertebrates expert form Norway – Magnus Jakobsen.

The attendees visited habitats of the wild population of the Apollo butterfly, as well as breeding farm in Karkonosze Gene Bank, where the employees from KPN presented their P. apollo breeding practices.

One of the reasons for the meeting was an unsettling situation of the Apollo butterfly in Pieniny Mountains, which is progressive decline of the population at all known sites there. The guests from Pieniny and Pieninský National Parks shared their ideas on reintroduction of the P. apollo, including reactivation of a breeding farm.

🇳🇴The participants also had an opportunity to learn about butterflies’ conservation and reintroduction in Norway. Mr. Jakobsen shared insights into innovative breeding methods, reintroduction programs and transforming excavation sites into habitats suitable for development of organisms, including the Apollo butterfly. Currently, the Norwegian government plans to restore the former coastal population of P. apollo using material from inland populations.

🤝The meeting was an important experiences exchange, which will be useful in the pursuits of P. apollo conservation and reintroduction, both in Polish and Czech National Parks and in Norway. Solutions used in Karkonosze National Park and in conservation programs in Norway may also be valuable directions for the improvement of the Apollo butterfly situation in the Pieniny Mountains.

In August, Karczma sądowa: Sudecka Stacja Terenowa Klubu Przyrodników in Uniemyśl, Poland, opened its doors to visitors as part of the Wooden Architecture Days 2026. It was a good opportunity to learn more about the historic building and the long process of its restoration.

🛖The Karczma is an important site for our LIFE Apollo2020 project, as it is part of the development of the Land of Apollo in the Sudetes. Its reconstruction is helping to create a place for learning and education about nature conservation, with a particular focus on the Apollo and its habitats.

We look forward to seeing more events taking place at the Karczma! :)

🦋𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼

We are delighted to introduce you to the new friends of Apollo butterfly. Three polish artists who had visited Apollo in his natural habitat (👉check out: 𝘼𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤 - 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙨). Let us get to know them more closely! Below, we outline the profiles of the artists.

🖌Sławomir Gortych
This author doesn’t need much introduction to the polish readers. One of Poland's most renowned and popular crime fiction authors and a multiple award-winning writer. Each of his novels has reached the top of Poland's bestseller lists. His crime series masterfully combines historical events with fictional narratives, guiding readers through the dark and mysterious history of Lower Silesia and the Karkonosze Mountains. A mountain enthusiast and admirer of the region. His debut novel has been translated into Czech and has also been adapted for the stage.

🎨Matylda Konecka
Raised in the Karkonosze Mountains, Matylda Konecka is an award-winning artist and illustrator. Through her paintings, she invites viewers on a journey into a world of surreal visions, blending reality with the aesthetics of fairy tales, dramatic landscapes, and dark legends. She has developed her artistic career in Poland and Scotland. In Scotland she has become one of the country's best-selling artists-illustrators. She was also named among Poland’s five leading female artists in 2016.

🖌Anna Szczypczyńska
Originally from Warsaw, Anna Szczypczyńska is an author and blogger who spent many years working as a journalist for leading magazines, including National Geographic Polska. She made the Izera and Karkonosze Mountains her home, dedicating herself to her passion for writing. Inspired by the region, she launched a series of children's and young adult books set in the Karkonosze Mountains. She is regarded as one of the rising stars of contemporary children's and young adult literature in Poland.

🦋Apollo – the Patron of the Arts

We are delighted to have had the opportunity to introduce the Apollo butterfly to exceptional guests. When we invited them to join us in mid-July, all three enthusiastically accepted. Apollo in his natural habitat was visited by:
• Sławomir Gortych Zagubiony w Karkonoszach - Sławek Gortych – crime fiction author
• Anna Szczypczyńska Panna Anna – young adult books author
• Matylda Konecka Matylda Konecka Illustrations – painter and illustrator

🌿Together, we visited one of the Apollo butterfly's habitats to show our guests this remarkable site, where a free-living population of the Apollo butterfly has been successfully re-established thanks to the LIFE Apollo2020 project. The artists had the rare opportunity to observe one of Poland's most beautiful butterflies up close – a species whose striking appearance has inspired artists for generations.

🦋Our experts introduced the guests to the butterfly's life cycle and biology, explained why its conservation is so important, and discussed its ecological role within its habitat. They also shared fascinating stories about the Apollo butterfly's natural history, the efforts to protect it, and the pioneering researchers and collectors who first documented the species.

🎨The meeting became a unique dialogue between the worlds of art and nature conservation – something that, fittingly for a butterfly bearing the name Apollo, seems to have been woven into the species' identity from the very beginning. We were pleased to share the story of this extraordinary and ethereal creature with our guests.

We quietly hope that this encounter has sparked a lasting friendship and that, before long, we may once again meet Apollo – perhaps in the pages of a novel or gazing back at us from the enchanting world of an illustration. Perhaps this time, paradoxically, it will be art that becomes Apollo’s patron...
