🦋Breeders meeting in Karkonosze National Park

Our LIFE Apollo2020 Team from Karkonoski Park Narodowy had the pleasure to host breeders meeting, with guests from Pieniński Park Narodowy, Pieninský národný park and an independent invertebrates expert form Norway – Magnus Jakobsen.

The attendees visited habitats of the wild population of the Apollo butterfly, as well as breeding farm in Karkonosze Gene Bank, where the employees from KPN presented their P. apollo breeding practices.

One of the reasons for the meeting was an unsettling situation of the Apollo butterfly in Pieniny Mountains, which is progressive decline of the population at all known sites there. The guests from Pieniny and Pieninský National Parks shared their ideas on reintroduction of the P. apollo, including reactivation of a breeding farm.

🇳🇴The participants also had an opportunity to learn about butterflies’ conservation and reintroduction in Norway. Mr. Jakobsen shared insights into innovative breeding methods, reintroduction programs and transforming excavation sites into habitats suitable for development of organisms, including the Apollo butterfly. Currently, the Norwegian government plans to restore the former coastal population of P. apollo using material from inland populations.

🤝The meeting was an important experiences exchange, which will be useful in the pursuits of P. apollo conservation and reintroduction, both in Polish and Czech National Parks and in Norway. Solutions used in Karkonosze National Park and in conservation programs in Norway may also be valuable directions for the improvement of the Apollo butterfly situation in the Pieniny Mountains.

In August, Karczma sądowa: Sudecka Stacja Terenowa Klubu Przyrodników in Uniemyśl, Poland, opened its doors to visitors as part of the Wooden Architecture Days 2026. It was a good opportunity to learn more about the historic building and the long process of its restoration.

🛖The Karczma is an important site for our LIFE Apollo2020 project, as it is part of the development of the Land of Apollo in the Sudetes. Its reconstruction is helping to create a place for learning and education about nature conservation, with a particular focus on the Apollo and its habitats.

We look forward to seeing more events taking place at the Karczma! :)

🦋𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼

We are delighted to introduce you to the new friends of Apollo butterfly. Three polish artists who had visited Apollo in his natural habitat (👉check out: 𝘼𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤 - 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙨). Let us get to know them more closely! Below, we outline the profiles of the artists.

🖌Sławomir Gortych
This author doesn’t need much introduction to the polish readers. One of Poland's most renowned and popular crime fiction authors and a multiple award-winning writer. Each of his novels has reached the top of Poland's bestseller lists. His crime series masterfully combines historical events with fictional narratives, guiding readers through the dark and mysterious history of Lower Silesia and the Karkonosze Mountains. A mountain enthusiast and admirer of the region. His debut novel has been translated into Czech and has also been adapted for the stage.

🎨Matylda Konecka
Raised in the Karkonosze Mountains, Matylda Konecka is an award-winning artist and illustrator. Through her paintings, she invites viewers on a journey into a world of surreal visions, blending reality with the aesthetics of fairy tales, dramatic landscapes, and dark legends. She has developed her artistic career in Poland and Scotland. In Scotland she has become one of the country's best-selling artists-illustrators. She was also named among Poland’s five leading female artists in 2016.

🖌Anna Szczypczyńska
Originally from Warsaw, Anna Szczypczyńska is an author and blogger who spent many years working as a journalist for leading magazines, including National Geographic Polska. She made the Izera and Karkonosze Mountains her home, dedicating herself to her passion for writing. Inspired by the region, she launched a series of children's and young adult books set in the Karkonosze Mountains. She is regarded as one of the rising stars of contemporary children's and young adult literature in Poland.

🦋Apollo – the Patron of the Arts

We are delighted to have had the opportunity to introduce the Apollo butterfly to exceptional guests. When we invited them to join us in mid-July, all three enthusiastically accepted. Apollo in his natural habitat was visited by:
• Sławomir Gortych Zagubiony w Karkonoszach - Sławek Gortych – crime fiction author
• Anna Szczypczyńska Panna Anna – young adult books author
• Matylda Konecka Matylda Konecka Illustrations – painter and illustrator

🌿Together, we visited one of the Apollo butterfly's habitats to show our guests this remarkable site, where a free-living population of the Apollo butterfly has been successfully re-established thanks to the LIFE Apollo2020 project. The artists had the rare opportunity to observe one of Poland's most beautiful butterflies up close – a species whose striking appearance has inspired artists for generations.

🦋Our experts introduced the guests to the butterfly's life cycle and biology, explained why its conservation is so important, and discussed its ecological role within its habitat. They also shared fascinating stories about the Apollo butterfly's natural history, the efforts to protect it, and the pioneering researchers and collectors who first documented the species.

🎨The meeting became a unique dialogue between the worlds of art and nature conservation – something that, fittingly for a butterfly bearing the name Apollo, seems to have been woven into the species' identity from the very beginning. We were pleased to share the story of this extraordinary and ethereal creature with our guests.

We quietly hope that this encounter has sparked a lasting friendship and that, before long, we may once again meet Apollo – perhaps in the pages of a novel or gazing back at us from the enchanting world of an illustration. Perhaps this time, paradoxically, it will be art that becomes Apollo’s patron...

🦋 Why is the Apollo butterfly an umbrella species? ☂️

The Apollo butterfly is known as an umbrella species because protecting it also helps protect many others. To survive, it needs healthy mountain habitats rich in native plants. When these habitats are restored and protected for the Apollo, countless other wildflowers, pollinators, insects, reptiles, birds, and other wildlife benefit too. That is why conserving the Apollo has an impact far beyond a single species.

☂️ Every umbrella needs someone to hold it. Our volunteers help make this possible by restoring habitats, monitoring butterflies, mapping host plants, and supporting conservation activities. Their work protects not only the Apollo butterfly, but also the many other species that share its mountain home.

W dniach 29 czerwca – 3 lipca 2026 r. zespół projektu LIFE Apollo2020 uczestniczył w XIII Europejskim Kongresie Entomologicznym w Tours we Francji 🇫🇷

Wydarzenie zgromadziło ponad 1200 uczestników! Mieliśmy unikalną okazję do wymiany doświadczeń i podzielenia się postępami projektu.

Wyniki naszych działań projektowych zostały zaprezentowane gościom na dwóch wygłoszonych prezentacjach i sesji plakatowej.

🧬 Tomasz Suchan z Instytut Geografii i Przestrzennego Zagospodarowania PAN podczas sesji „Owady w czasie - Muzeomika” zaprezentował temat dotyczący 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘆𝗰𝘇𝗻𝘆𝗰𝗵 aspektów ochrony i reintrodukcji niepylaka apollo pt. „Wykorzystanie genomiki muzealnej w ochronie 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰 w Europie Środkowej”, pokazując możliwość wykorzystania zbiorów muzealnych do lepszego poznania genetyki tego motyla, co może wspomóc procesy jego reintrodukcji.

🦋 Na Sympozjum LIFE zaprezentowaliśmy „𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗸𝗰𝗷𝗲̨ 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰 w Polsce i Czechach na podstawie badań i doświadczeń projektowych”. Grzegorz Hajnowski z Karkonoski Park Narodowy przedstawił uczestnikom podejmowane działania i dotychczasowe osiągnięcia w programie reintrodukcji niepylaka apollo.

📜 Na sesji plakatowej, posterem „Ochrona niepylaka apollo w Polsce, Czechach i Austrii”, zainteresowanym osobom przybliżyliśmy działania podejmowane w ramach LIFE Apollo2020 oraz 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗸𝘁𝘂, takie jak min. przywracanie populacji niepylaka i jego siedlisk 🌱

Mieliśmy sposobność nie tylko podzielić się naszymi działaniami, ale i nawiązać nowe, międzynarodowe kontakty, wysłuchać prezentacji i wykładów naukowców oraz pasjonatów entomologii, a także pogłębić naszą wiedzę. Przywieźliśmy mnóstwo ciekawych pomysłów i nowości dotyczących metod badawczych w entomologii, zarówno w terenie, jak i w laboratorium 🔬

From 29 June to 3 July 2026, our team took part in the XIII European Congress of Entomology held in Tours, France 🇫🇷

The event brought together more than 1200 participants!

We had a unique opportunity to exchange experiences and present the progress and results of the LIFE Apollo2020 project through two oral presentations and a poster.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁?

🧬 During the session "Insects through time – Museomics", Tomasz Suchan from Instytut Geografii i Przestrzennego Zagospodarowania PAN presented "Using museum 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 to guide conservation of the Apollo butterfly in Central Europe", focusing on the genetic aspects of the conservation and reintroduction of 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰.

🦋 At the LIFE Symposium, Grzegorz Hajnowski from Karkonoski Park Narodowy presented "𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰 in Poland and Czechia based on research and project experience", highlighting the conservation measures undertaken and the achievements of the Apollo butterfly reintroduction programme.

📜 During the poster session, we showcased the poster "Conservation of the Apollo butterfly in Poland, Czechia and Austria", introducing visitors to the activities carried out within the LIFE Apollo2020 project and its 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, including restoring Apollo butterfly populations and their habitats 🌱

The congress gave us an excellent opportunity not only to present our work, but also to establish new international contacts, attend presentations and lectures by scientists and entomology enthusiasts, and deepen our knowledge 🔬
