At the end of March, the third module of the Responsible Development Academy project in Poland began with the theme "Good Energy".

During this course, participants will learn about energy sources, energy efficiency, and how everyday energy consumption influences users' behaviour.

However, before the workshops, discussions, and meetings with experts began, there was an introductory meeting! During this meeting, participants had the opportunity to get to know each other better, integrate, and familiarize themselves with the topic of energy. The day was filled with executing the first mini-projects and team-building games.

From now on, the youth will collectively explore the secrets of energy and perhaps even develop ideas for more conscious energy use.

The module "Good Energy" program includes mini-lectures and masterclasses, as well as workshops and work on their own social campaign projects for good energy.

The time has come to put theoretical knowledge into practice! During the meeting, participants of the Zero Waste module presented the results of the social projects they had been working on for several weeks.

Let's learn about the actions of some of them:
The "Green Paws" group organized zero-waste workshops where we created accessories for animals. Toys and scent mats are made from old and unnecessary materials. The pets were thrilled! The toys were donated to an animal shelter in Krakow. To learn more, visit their profile: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556958345860

The Eco-Consultants worked on the "Eco-Event Consultant" project, aiming to assist organizations in planning events in line with the zero waste idea. During the testing phase of the project, participants deepened their knowledge of green practices in event organization, conducted a case study of an event planned for May, and developed eco-friendly recommendations dedicated to this event (what's more, some of them will be implemented!).

Another group prepared a series of podcasts called "Taste of Experience" and took us into the world of conversations and podcasts on ecological topics. Participants engaged in discussions with seniors about:
- Saving energy and water in their homes,
- Choosing ecological products,
- Eliminating plastic waste,
- Implementing simple yet effective tricks for sustainable living.

One of the points in the program of the "Zero Waste in Practice" module was a meeting at the Waste Processing Plant in Krakow. The participants had the opportunity to spend time at the Krakow eco-incinerator.

The academy participants learned about the solutions and benefits that such facilities bring to our environment in the company of experts and people working daily at the eco-incinerator.

The eco-incinerator was created as a response to Krakow's ecological and energy needs. It serves as the last and extremely important link in this system: it enables the management of municipal waste generated by the residents of Krakow and the recovery of energy from it.

The technology of thermal waste treatment is the most mature and pro-ecological solution to the waste problem, as evidenced by the long-term experience of European countries, where systems of thermal waste treatment with energy recovery form the basis of the entire waste management system.
It allows for transforming up to 245,000 tons of municipal waste per year. Incineration produces electrical energy (about 100,000 MWh) and thermal energy (about 1 million GJ). The energy obtained in the thermal treatment process is largely renewable and, therefore, ecological.

It is worth noting that the eco-incinerator impresses not only with its activity but also with its appearance. The enormous, green building, from which water vapour emerges from a large chimney, is impressive; the area of the building's roof is almost as large as the area of Krakow's Main Square.

How to create your own Zero Waste project?

Participants of the "zero waste in practice" module in Poland took part in training, during which they received a dose of knowledge on creating and managing social projects. In the next part, during the "Let's live zero waste!" Hackathon - generating social projects for the immediate environment, they worked in smaller groups on their ideas, taking into account several valuable pieces of advice they received from their mentor:
- Think globally, act locally
- The target group should be within our environment's reach
- Prepare a detailed action plan
- Specify what you need and what goals you want to achieve

Participants have a few weeks to refine and implement their project, and the results of their work will be presented at the concluding meeting.

What is the Polish Plastic Pact, and why is it worth joining?

The Polish Plastic Pact is an initiative aimed at reducing plastic consumption and its negative impact on the environment in Poland. It is an agreement between businesses, non-governmental organizations, public institutions, and other entities that commit to reducing plastic waste production, promoting recycling, and seeking alternative, more environmentally friendly materials.
It is worth joining the Polish Plastic Pact because it has the potential to improve the state of the natural environment in Poland significantly. By taking collective actions across various sectors, it is possible to reduce the amount of plastic produced and consumed within the country more effectively. Joining the pact also provides the opportunity to exchange experiences, benefit from the expertise of other entities, and collectively develop solutions for environmental protection.

The benefits of participating in the Polish Plastic Pact may include increased environmental awareness, improved company image as a company committed to environmental protection, conservation of natural resources, and potential financial gains from more efficient waste management.

During the online meeting, the participants of the Academy in Poland's Zero Waste module learned a bit about its goals and benefits.
Recording of the meeting will be shared soon on the VOD platform. Stay tuned.

How do young people learn about zero waste?

Zero Waste is becoming increasingly popular among young people who want to reduce the amount of waste generated and take care of our planet. The Responsible Development Academy comes to help in learning and educating in this direction, with one of its modules dedicated to Zero Waste. Joining the academy is not only about education but also a significant dose of motivation and inspiration through participation in workshops, hackathons, and discussions with experts.

The Academy of Responsible Development was established to actively involve the younger generation in actions related to designing a world based on non-economic values and shaping young leaders of responsible change.

In the face of the climate crisis, there is a need to strengthen education and raise awareness among young people towards making responsible and conscious choices, which will ultimately better prepare young leaders for conscious and active participation in socio-economic life and democratic society.

Practical knowledge and new competencies
Among the competencies increasingly desired and necessary for the future in a dynamic and changing world are social and global awareness, critical thinking, flexibility and willingness to learn, creativity, entrepreneurship, collaboration, time management, and stress management. Within the Academy of Responsible Development, courses are held from October to June 2024 in Poland, Turkey, and Italy, equipping young people with practical knowledge valued by employers and new competencies, allowing them to build networks, and increasing awareness of the challenges of responsible development.

In October 2023, the first course, "Competencies of the Future," was launched by the Foundation for Public Administration and Economics.

Applications for participation in the course were open to individuals aged 16 to 30. As part of the project, young people participated in a series of masterclass meetings, panel discussions, or expert lectures. Prof. Maria Urbaniec from the University of Economics in Krakow delivered a lecture on "Competencies for Sustainable Development," discussing the skills needed by the planet. Another lecture, "Instructions for Spaceship Earth," was delivered by Prof. Stanisław Mazur, the rector of the University of Economics in Krakow. The lectures also focused on careers. Rafał Sułkowski, the president of the Management Board of the Małopolska Social Economy Fund, talked about "Career and Business Pivots," while Bartosz Józefowski, the Deputy Director for Industry 4.0 at the Krakow Technology Park, discussed "Impact Start-ups," entrepreneurship that positively changes the world.

Sustainable Finance Training
The pilot scheme of the training on "Sustainable Finance", which we developed within the scope of the Erasmus+ "Responsible Development Academy" project, was held on November 5-6, 2023, at Kapsül Technology Platform with 25 young participants. Participants understood basic financial terminologies in the first workshop entitled "Financial Analysis through Self-Knowledge, " where non-formal learning techniques were applied. They carried out both team and individual studies on sustainable finance. In the continuation of the workshop, participants were engaged in various team activities to understand the concept of sustainability better, adapt sustainable practices to their lives, and create sustainable business strategies. Participants were included in practical scenarios designed to develop an overall understanding of financial literacy and analytical skills through self-awareness, working in teams and individually.
