Halfway through the ISABEL journey!

After 18 months of work, the Horizon Europe ISABEL Project has successfully completed the first half of its implementation.

During this period, the project established the scientific foundation for analysing labour market transformations and developed the first versions of its digital research and policy-support tools, which will now be further enriched and validated with stakeholders across six European regions.

Bringing research and policymaking together in Asturias 🇪🇸

Researchers from the University of Oviedo, within the ISABEL Horizon Europe Project, presented the project's latest research findings to policymakers, public authorities, business representatives and social stakeholders in Asturias.

The event brought together key regional decision-makers, including representatives from the regional government, the Asturian Society for Industrial and Economic Studies, the SEKUENS Agency, employers' associations, trade unions and other social organisations.

During the presentation, the researchers provided an overview of the current structural situation of the Asturian economy, highlighting the opportunities and challenges arising from the green transition, digitalisation and the increasing role of artificial intelligence. The discussion that followed encouraged an open exchange of ideas on future regional policies and will contribute to the development of Asturias' Smart Specialisation Strategy for 2028.

The event continued with interviews and a focus group as part of ISABEL's qualitative research. Participants expressed optimism about the opportunities created by the green and digital transitions, while also underlining the importance of strengthening AI-related skills and training for workers and organisations.

Through dialogue with regional stakeholders, ISABEL continues to support evidence-based policies that contribute to resilient labour markets and a socially fair transition across Europe.

Thessaloniki, Greece | Cedefop Conference

The ISABEL Horizon Europe Project was represented by PROGRESSUS_Research & Counselling at the Cedefop conference "The Skills Nexus between Productivity and Job Quality: Strengthening Foundations for a Competitive Europe", held in Thessaloniki on 29–30 June 2026.

The event brought together researchers, policymakers, employers, trade unions, and practitioners to discuss how skills, productivity, and job quality can strengthen Europe's competitiveness.

ISABEL contributed to these discussions by presenting its work on how the green and digital transitions are reshaping labour markets across Europe. Through AI-powered labour market intelligence and advanced data analytics, the project supports evidence-based policies for upskilling, reskilling, and a just transition.

📍 Gothenburg, Sweden | Regional Studies Association Annual Conference 2026

The ISABEL Horizon Europe Project engaged with two presentations, in a special session that was co-organised by ISABEL and other three projects: SkillResilience4EU, RENOVATE, and GSW.

First, our Project Coordinator, Dr. Nicholas Vretos, presented the ISABEL platform bringing together economic geography and information technology science, focusing on how AI-powered economic intelligence can strengthen labour market analysis and support evidence-based policymaking. By providing deeper insights into the green and digital transitions, the project helps policymakers better understand emerging challenges and opportunities across regions and industries.

Second, our Scientific Coordinator, Dr. Nikos Kapitsinis, presented the very initial analysis of our findings exactly in the middle of the project (month 18), which is now underway, following the completion of the collection of secondary and primary data. The presentation analysed evidence from job creation and destruction in the Danish regions by industry, occupation, educational level, s*x, and migration status from 2011 to 2023, seeking to identify patterns of the implications of the green and digital transitions for the regional labour market transformation.

The Regional Studies Association conference offered an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas with researchers, policymakers, and innovation experts working towards more resilient and sustainable regional development.

The ISABEL Horizon Europe Project was presented by our Project Coordinator, Dr. Nicholas Vretos, at this year's RSA Annual Conference.

We were pleased to have Nicholas Vretos, Coordinator of the ISABEL Horizon Project, represent the project at the conference and contribute to discussions on the role of AI and web data in shaping next-generation skills intelligence across Europe.

The event gathered experts from across Europe to discuss how web data and AI can help identify future skills needs, understand labour market trends, and support better decisions in education, training, and employment.

"What happens when local authorities, researchers and citizens sit around the same table to discuss the future of work?"

The ISABEL project’s Living Lab in Sjælland Region, Denmark, brings together researchers, policymakers, workers, firms and labour-market stakeholders to explore one of Europe's most pressing challenges: how to ensure that the transition to a greener and more digital economy creates opportunities for workers and communities, while mitigating the costs.

Through the Living Labs, ISABEL aims to better understand regional labour-market dynamics, skills needs and pathways for a socially just and geographically fair transition, strengthening the case that no socio-economic group or region is left behind. By engaging local stakeholders directly, the project helps ensure that future policy recommendations are grounded in real-world experiences and regional priorities, from a place-based perspective.

The insights gathered through the Living Lab in Sjælland will contribute to the development of evidence-based approaches for addressing skills shortages, supporting workforce adaptation and promoting socially fair labour-market transitions across Europe.
