Arturo was a polar bear who lived in Mendoza Zoo in Argentina, and for years he became known worldwide as the “world’s saddest polar bear.”
He spent his entire life in captivity, far from his natural Arctic home, enduring sweltering heat in an enclosure that lacked the space and environment a polar bear needs. Activists around the world campaigned for his transfer to a Canadian sanctuary where he could live in better conditions, but those efforts were denied.
Arturo lived to the age of 30—quite old for a polar bear—but tragically, he never experienced the freedom, cold climate, or natural life his species deserves. His story became a powerful symbol of the ethical debate surrounding animals in captivity, and many remember him as a heartbreaking reminder of why wildlife belongs in the wild.
