In 2016, Aphex Twin entrusted a 12 year old fan with directing his first official music video in 17 years. 🎥
The young filmmaker, Ryan Wyer, from Rush, County Dublin, Ireland, had been uploading homemade videos inspired by Aphex Twin’s music to YouTube. His work eventually caught the attention of the notoriously unconventional electronic music pioneer.
The result was “CIRKLON3 [ Колхозная mix ]”, released on June 21, 2016, as part of the Cheetah EP era. The video features Ryan, his friends and family in a playful, DIY-style visual that feels perfectly suited to Aphex Twin’s eccentric artistic universe.
What made the release particularly significant was the gap it followed: Aphex Twin’s previous official music video, Windowlicker, had been released in 1999—17 years earlier.
Rather than following the conventional route of hiring an established director, Aphex Twin gave a young fan the opportunity to bring his own creative vision to an official release.
