Today, on 14th August, Pakistan’s Independence Day, Sami Foundation, under the Better Cotton Project, organized a Tree Plantation Walk and Plantation Campaign at Sindh Agriculture University, Umerkot Campus.

The campaign aimed to celebrate Independence Day by promoting environmental protection, increasing greenery, and raising awareness about the importance of addressing climate change.

The Pro Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University,
Prof. Zia Ul Hassan Shah, delivered a speech. He appreciated Sami Foundation’s efforts in organizing the plantation campaign and expressed his gratitude for its contribution towards environmental sustainability.

As part of the campaign, 500 plants were planted by Sami Foundation at the university campus. In addition, the university allotted a complete plantation plot in the name of Sami Foundation, which was formally inaugurated during the event.

The university campus staff and Sami Foundation team actively participated in the program. Suresh Kumar, Program Manager at Sami Foundation, also joined the event and delivered a speech highlighting the importance of climate change, environmental protection, tree plantation, and the significance of 14th August.

The event concluded with a shared commitment from both the university and Sami Foundation to continue promoting tree plantation, environmental sustainability, and climate action for a greener and healthier Pakistan.

Nurturing Nature for a Cooler, Greener Tomorrow!

The Sami Foundation, under the Better Cotton Project, has successfully launched, Tree Plantation Drive across various villages in Taluka Kunri and Umerkot. By distributing saplings directly to local communities and celebrating plantation activities in different schools, the initiative is empowering communities and students to take meaningful action for a greener environment.

The main goals are to enrich local biodiversity, build resilience against climate change, and create natural cooling shields to help mitigate the devastating impacts of heatwaves and heat strokes in the region.

Planting a tree is a lifelong investment in our planet. A single sapling planted today can grow into a lifesaver for future generations—cleaning our air, providing shade, supporting biodiversity, and cooling our communities.

Let’s grow a greener, healthier, and more resilient future together!

Strengthening Safeguarding Across Field Operations

Sami Foundation conducted a Safeguarding Session at its Shaheed Benazirabad (SBA) Field Office for field staff from SBA and Matiari districts, with facilitation support from Concern Worldwide (CWW).

The session, facilitated by Mr. Imran Abbasi (HR, CWW) and co-facilitated by Ms. Maira (CWW), focused on strengthening staff understanding and application of CWW’s Safeguarding Standards, Code of Conduct, Do-No-Harm principles, field ethics, reporting mechanisms, and organizational accountability.

The session reinforced our shared commitment to ensuring safe, respectful, ethical, and accountable programming across all field activities.

Today is International Youth Day, a time to recognize the voices, potential, and contributions of young people in building a better future.

Pakistan is a young country, with around 64% of its population under the age of 30. Under the Aawaz II Project, Sami Foundation works to promote youth participation, social inclusion, rights awareness, and community-led action, ensuring young people have opportunities to raise their voices and take part in decisions that affect their lives.

Practical First Aid & Basic Rescue Training Held in Matiari
Sami Foundation, in collaboration with Concern Worldwide under the ZCRA Programme, organized a practical First Aid, CPR and Basic Rescue Training for government officials and staff at Gymkhana Meeting Hall, Matiari, on 11 August 2026. The training was facilitated by Sindh Emergency Rescue 1122, with Emergency Officer Irshad Bugti providing practical demonstrations and hands-on sessions on first aid, CPR, emergency response, safe handling of injured persons, drowning response, and basic rescue techniques. Participants actively engaged in demonstrations, practice sessions and Q&A, strengthening their preparedness to respond effectively during emergencies and potentially save lives before professional emergency services arrive. Certificates were also distributed to participants upon completion of the training.

Building More Sustainable Cotton Communities in Umerkot, Sindh
Under the Building Lives of Cotton Growing Communities in District Umerkot, Sindh, Pakistan project, supported by Better Cotton, Sami Foundation is strengthening farmers’ knowledge and practical skills through hands-on training and field demonstrations focused on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), biodiversity conservation, and safe pesticide practices.
Farmers were guided on selecting nationally registered pesticides, understanding local-language labels, promoting alternative pest-control methods, safely handling and disposing of pesticide containers, and preventing contamination of canals and other water sources.
These efforts go beyond improving cotton production—they contribute to healthier farming ecosystems, safer communities, responsible use of natural resources, and more resilient livelihoods. By equipping farmers with practical knowledge and sustainable practices, we are supporting a transition toward responsible cotton production that benefits both people and the environment.
Together with our partners, we continue to invest in farmer capacity, environmental stewardship, and sustainable agricultural practices across cotton-growing communities in Sindh.

Sami Foundation conducted a District Forum Meeting under the Aawaz II Project focusing on religious minority rights, identity, protection, and access to justice in connection with National Minorities Day, 11 August.

District Forum members discussed the concerns faced by minority communities and committed to placing these issues on the forum’s priority agenda, documenting community concerns, and strengthening advocacy and referral with relevant government departments. The meeting also highlighted the importance of increasing awareness about available support mechanisms and services.
