🌱 From Possibility to Prosperity: A Story of Women-Led Change in Drosh-II, Lower Chitral 🌱

In the quiet valleys of UC Drosh-II, where climate change continues to challenge traditional livelihoods, a powerful story of hope and transformation is unfolding—led by the hands of resilient rural women.

Through women-led, climate-smart tunnel farming, these women are not only cultivating crops, but also growing confidence, resilience, and a new future for their families. This initiative, financially supported by the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and implemented by Takal Welfare Organization (TWO) under the Restoring Social Services & Climate Resilience (RSS&CR) Project, is redefining what is possible for rural communities.

The journey began with the first cultivation cycle, where women—many of whom had never engaged in structured farming before—received training and hands-on support. With determination and dedication, they successfully produced around 800 kg of cucumber per tunnel. For many, this was more than a harvest—it was their first independent income, a moment of pride, and a step towards financial empowerment.

With the support of TWO, these women were connected to local markets, turning their efforts into tangible earnings. Demonstrating strong ownership, they reinvested part of their income, while additional support enabled the launch of the second cycle. In March 2026, the tunnels once again came alive—this time with tomato cultivation, using improved techniques and modern tools.

What makes this story even more powerful is the ripple effect it has created. Through orientation sessions conducted by agricultural experts and the Agriculture Extension Department, Tehsil Drosh, male family members also became engaged—supporting and learning alongside women. The initiative is gradually transforming not just livelihoods, but mindsets and social dynamics within the community.

Today, these tunnels stand as symbols of resilience, innovation, and opportunity. The success has drawn strong appreciation from the Agriculture Department, which is now keen to replicate this model across the region. Meanwhile, neighbouring communities are inspired—many are stepping forward, eager to adopt this approach and requesting further support from PPAF.

This is more than farming.
✨ It is about women leading change
✨ It is about communities adapting with dignity
✨ It is about building a future that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable
