Riverside Development Organization - Trust. RDO The RDO has been working with the most deprived communities of Sukkur city living along the river Indus, who were then forcefully moved from the bank

INTRODUCTION:
RDO started work in 2008 as a simple and small project with the vision “to serve humanity is to serve God” in order to fulfill the God’s commandment of serving the poorest of the poor. It was founded by a group development activists and social workers. RDO initially started to work among the slum dwellers residing along the bank of Indus (Katcha Ba**er) and implemented its 3 years pi

lot project “The Riverside Slum Children Project (RSCP)” for these slum dwellers. These were neglected people who are not socially recognized by the mainstream community. When these people migrated to Sukkur - Sindh their profession was fishing and transportation through boats but when modern transport systems were developed their means of income was lost and finished. The government also prohibited them from fishing in the Indus River. These people had very little business and consequently almost no income. Therefore, many of these people became beggars. The children living in the slums are living in extreme poverty and there were no opportunities for their education and well-being. The parents of the slum children also involve their children in different worst professions including rack pickers, working in hotels, garages, fisheries, industries and coolie work. Majority of the children are beggars and begging in the main markets and roads of the city & mostly were abused. District Sukkur is one of the cities which do not have clean drinking water. Almost 90% of the residents are drinking water from Indus River which is not treated and is directly distributed to the residents of the city. These slum dwellers are also drinking the water directly from the river which is highly risky behavior. They are at risk of many diseases. They are also living in very unhygienic conditions and are unaware of the hygienic practices. The violence against women and children is common in the target areas. These people have strong roots of feudalism, and harmful traditional practices that deny the rights women and children. Honour killings, murder, r**e, kidnapping, suicides and burnings and domestic violence are major forms of violence against women in the targets and the women and children are living in the miserable situation. About 95% of the residents of the slums do not have their national identity cards. The children are also not registered in the birth registration records of the government. They are also not registered as voters. Resultantly, they are unregistered residents. Due to this they cannot get jobs in public and private sector. So, RDO started working with these people to help them develop and to make them useful members of society. The Riverside’s initial objectives were:
I. To Provide health and medical care
II. To provide clean water for drinking
III. Empower the families ( men, women & children) to move away from the river bank to safer locations through:
a. Education
b. Training
c. Employment
Its unique genesis resulted in two advantages for the foundation of the organization; it initiated its program with people possessing prior field experience and owing to the specific background it inherited abroad and comprehensive outlook encompassing a socio-economic and environmental development perspective. In 2014 RDO was registered as a Trust Organization and has been continuing its activities initially taking the rural wage issues of agro-based labor, women’s and child rights through rights-based approach. These approaches were upheld by the organization in its later programs.
1.2 Organizational Belief
RDO has similar beliefs to those for which it was initially founded. These include issues related to child rights, child protection, women’s rights, women empowerment, wage movement, livelihoods, food mother and child’s health, reproductive health, hygiene and clean environment. It is RDO’s perception that poverty is created by many interconnected and interdependent problems. RDO believes that the bonds between these problems can only be broken and development made truly sustainable by addressing many of the issues simultaneously. Most NGO’s have chosen to specialize their expertise in one or two areas but, RDO has retained its emphasis on the holistic approach. RDO believes it must work in all sectors of the development context to be effective and sustainable. Furthermore, RDO believes that the community will only truly embrace development if they themselves identify their needs and lead the process of change. RDO take several strong stands against corruption and bribery. It is not open to either giving or receiving bribes. RDO’s stand in this area is now widely recognized in the community. RDO encourage so the organizations to follow its lead.
