BWCDO

BWCDO The main objective of BWCDO is to ensure that snow leopards and humans co-exist in harmony.

The Baltistan Wildlife Conservation and Development Organization (BWCDO) is working with local communities to jointly find solutions to protect the snow leopard population in Baltistan, GB. Baltistan Wildlife Conservation and Development Organization (BWCDO) was established in 1999 under a pilot project called Project Snow Leopard (PSL) in Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan. We provide c

ompensation to farmers who lose their livestock to snow leopard predation; build predator-proof corrals to reduce snow leopard attack and carry out aware raising activities in local schools. We carry out research to ascertain snow leopard population assessment and examine its diet preference. The people of Baltistan are extremely poor with an average annual income of less than US $ 500 per year. Livestock based activities form a major component of their livelihood strategies. Snow leopards often attack farmers’ livestock both on open range and in the villages in communal and individual corrals. The Balti farmers react by pursuing and shooting the snow leopards, or leaving poisoned carcasses for it to eat. Snow leopards’ attack on livestock is exacerbated by inadequate protection on part of the farmers who are poor and cannot afford to invest in anti-predator infrastructure. While snow leopard attacks on domestic livestock also correlate with decreasing natural prey and lax guarding techniques, more and more scientists are reaching a consensus that despite all protection, we may never be able to eliminate the conflict fully, therefore requiring some kind of management intervention.

Promoting coexistence between communities and wildlife!

The Baltistan Wildlife Conservation and Development Organization distributed Rs. 800,000 in livestock compensation to families affected by snow leopard attacks in Hushe, Skoyo, and Krabathang.

This compensation amount, for a total of 125 livestock losses, was distributed in the presence of Village Conservation Committee members to ensure transparency and community participation.

BWCDO remains committed to supporting local communities while conserving the elusive snow leopards of Baltistan. 🐆 🤝🌿

Learning Together: BWCDO conducts training on wildlife conservation practices and survey techniques in Skardu.

The Baltistan Wildlife Conservation and Development Organization (BWCDO) conducted a one-day training session in Skardu focusing on wildlife conservation, survey techniques, scientific approaches, and the indigenous knowledge system.

Training was organized for Govt wildlife field staff and local community conservationists working at the grassroots level across the region.

The long day session was on practical wildlife survey methods, mapping, ethical field practices, species identification, habitat assessment, and community-based conservation. Participants took part in interactive discussions and activities to better understand how scientific approaches and indigenous practices can complement each other in protecting local wildlife.

The session concluded with closing remarks by Conservator Forest and wildlife Mr Khadim Abbas, and Director CKNP Mr Raja Abid Hussain. Both of them emphasized the community's role in wildlife monitoring and the need to integrate indigenous knowledge with modern scientific techniques.

Our annual camera trapping survey has started. Every year, BWCDO deploys camera traps across its project areas in Baltistan, Pakistan, to ensure the presence of snow leopards, which contributes to determining their overall number and population in the region, and to studying the spatio-temporal behavior of the species. These camera traps are useful, especially when it comes to individuals in the population, providing pictorial references.
