There was a tree that grew in a desolate desert. Allah showered it with rain, made it green and gave it sweet fruits. When travelers passing by, thirsty and exhausted, would sit in its shade, eat its sweet fruits and drink water and move on.

One day, this tree said to Allah:
“O Allah! I am surprised that these people benefit from my shade and fruits but never thank me.”

Allah replied:
“O tree! This goodness is not yours. I have given you water, land, light and filled you with fruits. Now it is your job to pass on my kindness. This goodness is actually Mine, so you are just a means.”

Similarly, Allah says to man -
“I have given you blessings. If you want to fulfill the right of these blessings, then pass on their share to others. Withholding goodness is like a tree refusing to bear fruit.”

The gist of this story is -
Just as Allah has done good to us, we should do good to others, because we are not actually givers, but rather trustees and sources of Allah's goodness
