SABAWON Urban WASH

SABAWON Urban WASH SABAWON, Pakistan's non-political, independent and not for profit entity working with GIZ on Sanitation for million in district Peshawar.

Social Action Bureau for Assistance in Welfare and Organizational Networking (SABAWON) is working on Urban WASH Polio Plus Interventions Program in District Peshawar. Where the Focus population is 96,131 individuals included by Shaheen Muslim Town I (SMT-1) and Shaheen Muslim Town II (SMT-2) with 46,872 & 49,259 individuals respectively. According to the recent reports in the news from World Healt

h Organization (WHO), indicates that environmental water samples from Shaheen Muslim Town (SMT) has been declared as polio virus free. The environmental water samples taken from Shaheen Muslim Town (SMT) Peshawar have been tested negative for polio virus for the first time since November 2015 (declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). This was mainly due to quality vaccination conducted by polio team and effective health/ awareness campaigns carried out by different sectors including Polio, WASH, and health/ nutrition partners along with the sector partners such as WSSP & MSDP focusing on the hardware side including solid waste management on a wider scale. This calls for continuous and integrated efforts of health/ WASH/ Nutrition partners to help sustain the environmental water samples as negative. The current project with SABAWON will focus on the same union councils (Shaheen Muslim Town 1 and Shaheen Muslim Town 2) with an effort to further improve communities’ access to improved WASH services in areas having un-improved sanitation conditions & unsafe drinking water. SABAWON will continue applying WASH behavior change approaches in both the UCs to help sustain the environmental water samples as negative. SABAWON will base its approach on bringing positive changes in behavior of different community groups including common citizens, already established WASH committees, young school students, LHWs/ LHVs & polio workers engaged in the areas. In addition, the project will focus on entire district Peshawar to advocate at larger scale for WASH behaviour change at community level with focusing on capacity building of officials and staff from relevant Government Line Agencies on improved sanitation and hygiene education and focus on WASH at workplaces/ institutions (schools & health facilities). In an effort to enhance the efficiency of primary and secondary collection of solid waste in urban settlement, UNICEF supported WSSP for provision of solid waste management equipment (Waste Bins - 350 bins & Tipping Waste Trollies - 24) for Shaheen Muslim Town 1 and 2 (SMT 1 & 2) to supplement the ongoing activities in improving the solid waste disposal mechanism. This will help in contributing towards cleaning-up of the environment and also towards the eradication of water borne diseases with particular to polio eradication initiatives. The solid waste equipment’s have recently been handed over to WSSP for primary collection of solid waste in areas of SMT1 & 2 where vehicles are unable to move due to narrow and congested streets. SABAWON under the current project will chalk out a follow-up mechanism for efficient utilization of this solid waste equipment’s involving the WASH committees and common citizens of the area. Program output:
• Strengthening the enabling environment for urban WASH service providers and communities through capacity building, knowledge enhancement, linkages development for sustainability of Urban WASH interventions & polio eradication by focusing on polio missed children
