AI is entering a remarkable new chapter in mathematics. OpenAI says a new internal model, which began training on August 28, has resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems across multiple areas of mathematics, alongside its previously announced AI-generated solution to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem. OpenAI says the pace of progress has surprised its own mathematicians and has now established an independent advisory group of mathematicians to help responsibly share and assess these advances. The claims are extraordinary, but the mathematical community will ultimately need to examine the underlying proofs and verify the results independently. If these results withstand rigorous scrutiny, they could mark a significant moment in the history of mathematical research and in the growing role of AI as a tool for scientific discovery.

A striking warning from inside DeepSeek is fueling debate over who should control the world’s most powerful AI: engineer Shengyu Liu, who works on kernel optimization at the Chinese AI lab, argues that frontier intelligence should be available to everyone openly and affordably, warning that concentrating advanced AI in the hands of a few companies could deepen inequality and create a future resembling Cyberpunk 2077. In his widely discussed essay, Liu said he does not trust Anthropic or OpenAI to guarantee such broad access and, using an intentionally dramatic historical analogy, compared the prospect of Anthropic controlling the most advanced AI or AGI to Hi**er obtaining atomic-bomb technology before the Allies. He framed AI’s societal trajectory as potentially moving toward two extremes: one in which enormous productivity gains are broadly shared, and another in which a handful of technology companies control advanced intelligence and resources while most people are left behind. Liu said this belief in powerful, affordable and openly available AI is also part of why he has remained at DeepSeek. A major debate is unfolding over the future of mathematics in the age of AI. Twenty-five Fields Medalists including Terence Tao, Pierre Deligne, Peter Scholze, Maryna Viazovska and Yu Deng have signed a declaration warning of a “severe misalignment” between the goals of AI companies and those of the mathematical community. Their intervention comes days after OpenAI announced an AI-generated proposed resolution of the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, produced through a multi-agent effort involving roughly 10,000 concurrent agents, with the solution reached after about 88 hours and subsequently formalized and verified in Lean.

The medalists are not arguing that AI should be rejected; rather, they warn that mathematics is about much more than rapidly producing correct answers: major problems traditionally generate new concepts, methods, explanations and generations of trained mathematicians. They fear that turning famous unsolved problems into AI benchmarks and rapidly producing mathematical results without sufficient time to develop explanations, identify new ideas and properly connect them with previous work could damage that intellectual ecosystem.
