This Ramadan, we at the Society for Youth (SFY) came together with partners and volunteers to organize our Eid Gift Project: an initiative rooted in dignity, care, and community led action. Ahead of Eid, we spent meaningful time with students from an under resourced school, creating a space of joy, play, and belonging before sharing thoughtfully prepared Eid gifts.
For us, this project was not just about giving. It was about how we give, and who gets to lead. Our grassroots organizers practiced leadership by planning operations, coordinating volunteers, engaging with children, and organizing celebrations with empathy and intention. Through games, conversations, and shared laughter, we saw how joy itself can become a powerful civic practice.
This work reflects our belief that leadership is cultivated through experiential learning: by showing up, reflecting, and organizing together. When young people lead with care, power disparities begin to shrink, and communities grow stronger.
We’ve shared a reflective project blog capturing what we did, why it mattered, and what we learned along the way.
