Gypsies live outside the moral conscience of society. There lies a huge gulf of racism, inequality and discrimination. Slumabad is an organization working to fill this gap by means of empowerment, education and better economic opportunities for the less privileged. Join us to share your care and respect for the most deprived segment of the society. Slumabad works for gypsy kids in the urban slums of Lahore. We work for establishing schools, taking part in solving sanitary problems as well as helping out in urgent situations. Like other children, gypsy kids need a safe place to live, study and play. Life is hard for children in Pakistan, Slumabad is meant to be the hope worth working for and supporting. Join with us in this worthy cause. We believe that every human being should be treated equally no matter of caste, class or economic and social background. Our mission is to help every slum kid to have access to education, health and equal opportunities in an environment where human rights are valued and respected. Slumabad is helping slum kids realize their dreams in Pakistan.

A Death, Funeral and afterwards…

We lost Akbar, a father of six, to a sudden heart attack when he was going to start his day: collecting garbage from door to door.

He fell off from the cart he was driving and later on died in hospital.

With your support and kindness we were able to arrange everything from burial to funeral and last rites.

Two of his children are studying in our school. His widow and older children will be starting a life without their husband and father.

We want to make their journey easier by helping through food support, livelihood chances and better economic opportunities.

Pioneers

"The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all,"

Children from Pakhiwas (gypsy and nomad) community for the first time are going to attend college and university. They are pioneers from their community. Most of their parents are illiterate and they are so proud that their kids successfully passed their exams.

We hide their identity to intentionally save them from the stigma of being born in a low-caste and poor family.

With the power of conviction and convincing from our founder, their parents agreed to let them study. The most hard and battled over decision was letting girls go to college and university.

These children are special in many ways as they come from a community where endogamy and child marriage is a common practice and strictly followed, and parents are wary of influences of outer world and community.

So you have to walk like a tight rope and tread every step very carefully. Thanks to our teachers and community mobilizers for keeping on educating and abiding by these unwritten and invisible codes to pave the way of education for these children.

Girls will be enrolled to nearmost institutes and boys will be sent to where their names fall in the merit list.

Their education will not only pave their ways towards social mobility but help them fight the stigma of caste, social status, early marriage and poverty trap.

We have many good news to share with you as kids are very excited to start their academic
year.

One girl and boy will be going to college and university this year.

That is only through your support and love and confidence in these children.

Five girl students will be placed in middle school as they are on the path to academic
excellence.

Monday Motivation

From Jhuggis to Writing Workshop
بیٹیاں جو پڑھ جائیں
نسلیں سنور جائیں

We believe that these girls, empowered and enabled will tell their stories with much rigor and grit.

It is a small step for many affluent children, but a giant leap when you climb from bottom of the pyramid.

These three students participated in a story writing workshop.

Coming from a humble background and dreaming about a better and inclusive future, it is our aim to pave paths for such promising and creative children.

What does it take for social mobility: a gentle nudge, a kind smile and empathy.

Monday Motivation

When it rains…

It is raining sporadically and the poor Pakhiwas families are repairing their tent covers to sustain monsoon heavy pour.

These Pakhiwas(gypsy and nomad) women are an ultimate source of inspiration as they build their homes, raise their children, sift plastic, metal, cardboard and glass from the trash, and hold the whole family together.
