Asia’s debt crisis continues to deepen as countries face rising debt payments, shrinking fiscal space and renewed pressure to cut public spending.

The crisis reflects deeper inequalities in the global financial system, where public resources are diverted from people’s needs to creditor payments.

We call for debt cancellation, reparations and a UN Framework Convention on Sovereign Debt.

Across Asia, debt continues to drain public resources, deepen austerity, and expose communities to corporate capture, climate destruction, and loss of livelihoods.

From farmers resisting IMF-driven agricultural reforms in Pakistan to communities demanding accountability for World Bank/IFC-backed coal projects in the Philippines, the struggle is clear: debt is not just a financial issue. It is a system of extraction and control.

At the Santa Marta Conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels, debt has already been identified as a major barrier to the transition.

Across the Global South, countries are forced to divert critical resources into debt payments - while many remain locked into fossil fuel extraction to generate the revenue needed to pay creditors.

A UN Debt Convention can change that.

It could:
• Free up public funds for climate action, now and when disaster strikes
• Prevent future debt crises from derailing progress
• Address historical injustices and illegitimate debts
• Create fairer, more democratic global rules

A just transition is not possible without debt justice

The at says NO to gas as a transition fuel.

Yesterday, we stood together to demand a real fossil fuel phaseout and a direct path to renewables. Calling gas a "transition fuel" is just a rebranding of the same old crisis. We’re pushing for a future that’s fossil-free and a just transition led by the people, not the polluters.
