Theme: Nutritionally Acquired Immunodeficiency A Vicious Cycle

The fifth webinar, hosted by University of Child Health Sciences, focused on the strong link between malnutrition, immunity, and recurrent infections in children. The discussion highlighted how malnutrition weakens immune defenses while infections further worsen nutritional status, creating a vicious yet preventable cycle.
The webinar was moderated by Dr. Wajiha Rizwan, Associate Professor of Pediatrics. The welcome note and vote of thanks were delivered by MD UCHS Prof. Tipu, who appreciated the speaker and Panelists and ensured full support of UCHS & CHL to improve child health in Pakistan.
Key insights from speakers and panelists
Prof. Junaid, Pro VC, UCHS, Dean, CHL, Keynote Speaker, explained how malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies impair immune responses at the cellular level. He emphasized that maternal nutrition plays a vital role, as malnutrition can be transferred from mother to baby, leading to continued growth faltering and delayed development unless early interventions are initiated.
Prof. Hina Ayesha, President PPA Punjab, highlighted that malnutrition weakens immunity and infections further aggravate nutritional deficits. She stressed the role of micronutrient deficiencies in immune dysfunction and emphasized early nutrition, breastfeeding, and timely complementary feeding. She also called for addressing nutrition alongside infection treatment and disseminating this knowledge at public forums.
Dr. Kaleem Malhi, SG PPA Punjab, highlighted that zinc deficiency is one of the most commonly overlooked causes of recurrent infections. He urged clinicians to consider zinc deficiency in children presenting with malnutrition, recurrent infections, frequent diarrhea, and growth faltering.
Prof. Rameeza, Professor of Preventive Pediatrics FJMU, strongly emphasized the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding as a cornerstone for child survival and immune development.
Dr. Saadia Khan, Assistant Professor CH and ICH Multan, highlighted that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months provides the first line of immune defense. She stressed the importance of timely introduction of diverse complementary foods at six months, along with proper feeding practices and hygiene, to prevent growth faltering and interrupt the malnutrition and infection cycle.
*Key message*
Breaking the cycle of nutritionally acquired immunodeficiency requires an integrated approach focusing on maternal nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding, appropriate complementary feeding, micronutrient support, infection management, and hygiene practices, supported by strong advocacy and community awareness.
