"The main environmental challenge of the 21st century is poverty. When you don't know where your next meal is coming from, it's hard to consider the environment 100 years down the line."
- Bjorn Lomberg

October 17th is celebrated as the International Day for Eradication of Poverty every year.
On this day, it is important to acknowledge how destitution and the environment are interconnected with each other. A person's quality of life and standard of living are influenced by a variety of factors, including the climate, housing alternatives, land availability, water supply, insects that spread disease, waterborne infections, local infrastructure, access to healthcare, etc.
With the ongoing environmental crisis, it is crucial to understand such intricacies and take out measures for it.

"Clean hands are within reach."

Each year on October 15, Global Handwashing Day is observed to highlight the importance of hand hygiene. Hand washing is a practice which is essential in order to prevent many diseases.
During the COVID-19 outbreak, handwashing was considered compulsory to prevent this virus from harming us. Handwashing with soap is an affordable way to avoid diseases and to lead a healthy life.
To continue this practice, our government must make sure that clean water is provided to everyone and we must use this water with care.
This day is celebrated every year to teach us the importance of washing hands and we must play our part and promote this practice.

The World Migratory Bird Day is a global awareness campaign, held on the second Saturday of October every year, that emphasizes the importance of conserving migratory birds and their habitats. Damage to them and their habitat happens in the form of deforestation, illegal hunting and poaching, which inadvertently causes harm directly to the ecosystem and the entire food web.

“E-waste” refers to any unwanted electronic device. It include old computers, smartphones, appliances, and other gadgets that are no longer in use or have become obsolete. E-waste often contains hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants. Exposure to these hazardous materials can have adverse effects on human health.
Moreover, electronic devices also contain valuable resources like gold, silver, and copper. When not recycled properly, these resources go to waste, contributing to the depletion of finite resources.
Proper E-waste management is crucial to prevent environmental pollution and conserve precious materials.

E-waste management must include the following:
-Recycling
-Reuse
-Proper collection programs
-Legislation and Regulation

"We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge; so many lives wouldn't have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness."
- Petra Nemcova

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction provides an occasion to recognize the stride made in reducing the effects of disasters and the ensuing losses to health, life, and livelihood.
Fighting inequality for a strong future is today's theme.

In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the Sendai Framework and the Paris Agreement on climate change are complementary. The International Day in 2023 will examine how inequality and disasters are inversely correlated.
