[Friday Facts: Breast Cancer Awareness]
Female childhood cancer survivors who were treated with chemotherapy— even if they did not receive radiation treatments to their chest — are six times more likely than the general population to be diagnosed with breast cancer later in life. For those who did receive chest radiation, that chance increases exponentially and is on par with those who have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.

[Childhood cancer awareness - Types of treatments - Chemotherapy Benefits, Side Effects & Late Effects]

Benefits of chemotherapy:
Despite the potential side effects, chemotherapy has been an effective, reliable cancer treatment for decades. Chemo can rid your body of cancer completely, or it can help you have a better quality of life by reducing symptoms. Chemotherapy can also make other treatments, such as surgery or radiation therapy, more effective.

Side effects of chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy is an effective treatment but can cause side effects. Chemo can’t tell the difference between fast-growing cancer cells and fast-growing healthy cells. When the chemo damages healthy cells, your child can experience side effects. The most common side effects include:

• Anemia
• Bleeding
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Hair loss
• Infection
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea and vomiting.

Late effects of chemotherapy
Many side effects of chemotherapy will go away after you stop treatment. Some effects of chemotherapy, though, may not show up until months or years after treatment. Late effects of chemo can include:
• Cognitive (memory and thinking) issues, also called “chemo brain.”
• Cardiotoxicity, or heart problems caused by cancer treatment.
• Neuropathy, or symptoms of nerve damage.
• Infertility.

[Childhood Cancer Awareness - Treatment - CHEMOTHERAPY]

The most common childhood cancer treatment, chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells and prevent tumor growth. It may be paired with other cancer treatments such as radiation therapy or surgery. Your child will get treatment in cycles. Cycles include treatment days and recovery days.

Ways to give chemotherapy
• Intravenously (IV), or through a vein as an “infusion.” Most people receive chemo through an IV.
• As an injection, or a shot.
• Orally, as a pill or liquid that you swallow.
• Topically, as a cream that you rub into your skin.

How intravenous (IV) chemotherapy drugs are given?
Chemotherapy can go directly into a vein through a:
• Needle: Usually in your child’s arm.
• Catheter: A thin, flexible tube attached to a vein (usually in your child’s chest).
• Port: A small disc inserted under the skin. A catheter attaches to the port to deliver chemotherapy. Port placement requires minor surgery.
• Pump: A device that attaches to a catheter or port that controls the amount of the chemotherapy drug your child receive

[Childhood cancer awareness - Types of treatments - Surgery]

SURGERY:
Cancer surgery is done to remove part or all of a tumor (growth) from the body. Surgery was the first kind of cancer treatment developed and is used to treat many types of cancer.

Surgery is used for cancer in many ways:

🔶️To diagnose cancer
Figuring out if your child have cancer can mean that some or all of a tumor will have to be removed from his/her body. This procedure is called a biopsy.

🔶️To stage cancer
Staging surgery is done to find out how large the tumor is, if it has spread, and if so, where.

🔶️To treat cancer
Sometimes, surgeons are able to remove solid tumors completely. Other times, your child may need surgery alongside other treatments.

🔶️To relieve side effects (palliative or supportive)
This type of surgery is used to relieve side effects caused by cancer and to improve your child's quality of life.

🔶️To repair or reconstruct body parts
Reconstructive surgery is used to improve the way a child looks after major cancer surgery. It’s also used to restore the function of an organ or body part after surgery

[Childhood cancer awareness - Types of treatments]

There are many ways to treat cancer because different types of cancers need different approaches. The treatment plan your child’s cancer care team recommends will be based on:
🔶️The type of cancer
🔶️How far the cancer has spread
🔶️How fast the cancer is growing
🔶️Your child’s needs and your family’s preferences

In many cases, a team of doctors works with a child and the family to provide care. This is called a multidisciplinary team. Pediatric cancer centers often have extra support services for children and their families, such as child life specialists, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, and counselors. Special activities and programs to help your child and family cope may also be available.

The common types of treatments used for childhood cancer are listed below.
⭐Surgery
⭐Therapies using medication
⭐Chemotherapy
⭐Immunotherapy
⭐Radiation therapy
⭐Bone marrow transplantation/stem cell transplantation

Usually, more than one type of cancer treatment is used. For example, a child might have radiation or chemotherapy to shrink a tumor before surgery. Or chemotherapy might be given after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells.

We will share details in next post. Stay connected! Be aware & share to care!
