A shared commitment to a more inclusive future.

AKU's Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) and the Network of Organizations Working for Persons with Disabilities, Pakistan (NOWPDP), have formalized a five-year partnership agreement to advance inclusive education in Sindh.

The signing marks an important milestone in a broader effort to strengthen educational systems, build institutional capacity, and expand opportunities for children with disabilities to access quality learning. Through evidence-informed approaches, local expertise, and trusted collaboration, the partnership aims to support an education system where every child is seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Together, we are working toward lasting change that advances equity, strengthens communities, and creates a more inclusive future for Pakistan.

We asked NOWPDP's leadership one question: what does independence really mean to them? Their answers might surprise you.

Now it's your turn: what does independence look like to you? Tell us below ๐Ÿ‘‡

Is Pakistan truly independent if millions are still left behind? ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ

Ahead of our Independence Day, key voices from our leadership, Amin Hashwani, Sara Taher Khan, Farhat Rasheed, and Mubariz Siddiquiโ€”reflect on what true independence means to them.

For Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), independence isn't just a date on the calendarโ€”it is accessibility, equal opportunity, and the ability to pursue dreams without barriers. Inclusion leads to independence.

This 14th August, let's redefine what it means to be independent: Independence for All, not just a few. ๐Ÿ’š

What does independence mean, if you have never had a fair shot at it?
Nearly two-thirds of Pakistan is under 30. Yet millions of young people with disabilities are still called โ€œthe futureโ€ while being left out of the present, waiting for the classroom, the skill, and the job that turn inclusion into independence.
This International Youth Day, days before our own Independence Day, we are asking the harder question: independent, but is everyone included?
Independence is not only a date we celebrate. It is a life every young person deserves the freedom to build.
Tell us where you stand. ๐Ÿค

Lahore joined the mandate of creating for a cause, bringing love and inclusion to the craft table.
Every charm embossed with dots was inspired by braille and had both meaning behind it and contributed to a bigger purpose.
A big thank you to Lahore for showing up and showing that the world becomes beautiful when all colors are used, when everybody is included.
Creating a Bashamool Pakistan, one city at a time by painting them in the colors of inclusion, celebration and independence!

We are proud to honor Abubakr Azeem, our Hunar trainee-in-progress at NOWPDP CEDI Lahore, for winning the gold medal in Grappling at the IFT Fight Pass Lahore. This victory adds another notch to his belt full of awards and titles, and stands as a strong reminder of his hard work, grit and talent.
As a person with a hearing and speech impairment, Abubakrโ€™s victory showcases the potential and talent that all persons with disabilities hold within themselves to succeed and shine, and to carve out their own path to independence when given the right opportunities and an inclusive, supportive environment.
Congratulations, Abubakr! Your excellence is an example for all of us: whether itโ€™s grappling with data on a computer or winning a grappling match in the ring, true independence is built through commitment, dedication and inclusivity.
