Living Wage Action Day 2025

Workers deserve fair pay, not poverty wages!
Across Pakistan, workers continue to face wages that don’t cover basic living costs. A living wage means enough to pay for food, shelter, healthcare, education, and transportation — a life with dignity.

We demand:
1. All workers receive wages that meet their real living costs.
2. Brands and suppliers take full responsibility for fair pay.
3. Transparent monitoring and accountability in supply chains.
4. Policies that guarantee living wages and protect workers’ rights.

Voluntary promises have failed. Exploitation continues.
Workers are raising their voices with placards saying:
“No more poverty wages. Living wage now!”
NTUF stands with workers in every sector — fighting for justice and dignity.

“Sibt e Hassan's Ideas Still Light the Way”
On July 31, 2025, the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) organized a commemorative seminar at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, marking the birth anniversary of Syed Sibt e Hassan — a visionary writer and Marxist intellectual whose ideas continue to shape our struggles for justice, equality, and freedom.

A diverse panel of scholars, journalists, and labor leaders paid tribute to his legacy:

🔹 Dr. Jaffar Ahmed — Director, Institute of Historical and Social Research
🔹 Dr. Riaz Shaikh — Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, SZABIST
🔹 Dr. Tauseef Ahmed — Renowned Columnist
🔹 Sohail Sangi — Senior Journalist
🔹 Zehra Khan — General Secretary, HBWWF
🔹 Sajjad Zaheer — Leader, Progressive Writers Association
🔹 Nasir Mansoor — General Secretary, NTUF

Through poetry, politics, and philosophy, Sibt e Hassan spoke fearlessly — and continues to speak to generations resisting oppression.

“We demanded dignity. They responded with threats.”
On 27 July 2025, workers marched from Regal Chowk to the Karachi Press Club to defend their right to unionize — a "right" now under attack.

Women were harassed. Leaders were threatened with violence. Workers were fired for organizing.
The police stayed silent. The Labour Department looked away.

But we stood together — across factories, homes, and industries — to say: we won’t be silenced.

We demand:
• Reinstatement of terminated workers
• An end to threats & fake unions
• Protection for leaders like Aqib Hussain & Shazia Kanwal
• No anti-worker labor code
• Enforce labor rights under GSP Plus, Pakistan Accord & Due Diligence laws

This is more than a protest. It’s a fight for survival — with dignity.

"Rivers Are Living Entities - Blocking Their Flow Is a Crime Against Nature"

URGENT: Experts Warn 6 Canals Project Threatens Sindh's Survival

At a seminar hosted by NTUF and Alternate at Karachi Press Club on 14 March 2025, experts and activists united to defend the Indus River - Sindh's lifeline.

🌊 Why This Matters:
- The Indus River's destruction could push 250 million people into hunger and poverty
- Coastal areas losing land to the ocean in Thatta and Badin
- 70pc of revenue comes from agriculture dependent on the Indus

📢 Diverse Voices Speaking Out:
"The river is a living being. If you hurt it, it will react." - Zehra Khan, HBWWF

"Projects in GB are destroying the environment, with displaced mountains causing deadly rockfalls." - Ali Ahmed Jan, Social Activist

"Sindh water belongs to Sindh, not Punjab or any other province." - Tabassum Khoso, Imdad Foundation

"The 6 Canal is a guise for letting the elite conduct real estate business." - Dr. Riaz Shaikh, Academic

"Corporate farming will adversely affect Sindh. These canals are illegal." - Mehnaz Rehman, Journalist

🔍 The Bigger Picture:
- Critics call the 6 Canal project a guise for elite real estate business
- WAPDA criticized for water management, with calls for independent audit
- Environmental protections being violated under Ramsar Convention
- Climate-induced migration already occurring due to water obstruction

✊ Join the Movement:
Supporting the mass resistance to save the Indus River is a historical duty for anyone concerned about our region's future!
