Part-3: Bounded Respect: A Turning Point in My Academic Career
In 2013, I had a conversation with a senior colleague that changed everything for me. He introduced me to the idea of "Bounded Respect," and it was an eye opener.
"Inside the university," he said, "everyone respects you because of your title. But outside those walls, your rank means nothing. Out there, respect is earned through your expertise, knowledge and the impact you make."
This was a wake-up call. I realized that while I was focused on meeting publication requirements and climbing the academic ladder, I was missing a bigger opportunity: to make a real difference beyond academia.
I had been struggling with publishing my research in high-impact journals (as discussed in Part-1and Part-2), but I had something even more valuable—knowledge that could help people. So, I decided to take a leap of faith. I turned my collected data on how to publish in high ranked journals into workshops and started sharing my insights in a way that was accessible and practical.
The response was incredible. My first workshop led to more invitations across the country. I discovered that by stepping outside the traditional academic path, I could reach more people and make a greater impact.
Public speaking can be frightening, but as educators, we already have the skills to engage an audience. It's about recognizing our potential and showing others how we can help them.
Here's what I've learned:
Your knowledge is powerful: It has value far beyond academic journals.
Think creatively: Find new ways to share your insights and make them accessible.
Engage with the public: Speaking engagements and workshops can amplify your impact.
Build your brand: Let your expertise define you, not just your title.
By embracing opportunities beyond traditional academia, I've found a deeper sense of fulfillment and respect that transcends institutional boundaries. It's about making a real difference in people's lives.
By stepping out of my comfort zone, I found something amazing. Real respect doesn't come from a fancy office or a big title. It comes from touching lives and sharing what we know. Our students are our ambassadors; when we equip them with the right tools and insights, they carry our legacy forward into the world, making their own contributions to society.
