Women’s representation in media is gradually increasing, but the real challenge is ensuring that women can successfully enter, remain, and grow within newsrooms.
Dr. Ayesha Ashfaq , Chairperson, Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, highlights the barriers faced by women journalists from cultural expectations and hostile newsroom environments to technology-facilitated gender-based violence, trolling, and deepfakes.
She emphasizes that creating a safer and more inclusive media environment is a collective responsibility. Empowering women is important, but we also need to educate and engage men. “He for She” calls for a shift in mindset among male journalists and media professionals to support women’s participation and leadership in journalism.
