Session 5: Indigeneity and Climate Change: Heritage Preservation as a Blueprint for Contemporary–Future Resilience.
Date & Time: Wednesday, 16 July 2025 | 5:30–7:30 pm (PKT)

The Global South faces not only the physical impacts of climate breakdown but also the lingering legacies of colonialism that have severed communities from land-based knowledges. By reviving indigenous life ways, as living archives of ecological stewardship, we can transform heritage preservation into a forward looking strategy for climate resilience, reconnecting cultural memory with sustainable practices.

Join our speakers to:
- Illuminate how dismantled indigenous epistemologies offer vital frameworks for resisting climate colonialism.

- Showcase grassroots efforts restoring traditional land, water and biodiversity practices across South Asia.

- Debate adaptive reuse and communal rituals as modes of reparative, place-based resilience.

- Envision how decolonizing our imaginations can cultivate blueprints for a sustainable future

Session 4: Communal Loss: The Erosion of Third Spaces in Modern South Asia
Date & Time: Monday, 14 July 2025 | 8:00 – 10:00 pm (PKT)

Communal spaces—once the thallas, chaurahas, and baithaks where neighbours gathered to share ideas, poetry and music—are vanishing under rapid urbanization and commercialization. Today, malls and food streets have become our only “third spaces,” yet they’re often inaccessible or appropriated by men, further marginalizing women and widening class divides
Join our expert panel as we:

- Reassess the cultural and wellbeing value of informal communal spaces
- Debate how to make public areas genuinely inclusive, without resorting to privatization
- Explore the role of policies, norms, and encroachments in the loss of shared urban life

Be part of this critical conversation on reclaiming third spaces for all.

Session 3: Metamorphosis of the Past: Architectural Heritage and Communal Memory in South Asia
Date & Time: Friday, 11 July 2025 | 5:30 – 7:30 PM (PKT)

Historical buildings are more than stone and mortar, they encode our communities’ stories and cultural ideals. Yet ill-advised restorations, demolitions and urban encroachments threaten to erase those narratives and deepen social marginalization.

Join us to:

- Analyse how inappropriate conservation techniques and rapid urbanization compromise the integrity of South Asia’s architectural heritage.

- Examine emblematic cases, Bangladesh’s Lalbagh Qilla wall breach and Karachi’s Empress Market redevelopment, and their impacts on local livelihoods.

- Reimagine communal gatherings outside capitalist and commercial frameworks, and explore their influence on today’s heritage preservation discourse.

Session 2: Decolonization: Post-Independence Art and Architecture in South Asia
Date & Time: Wednesday, 9 July 2025 | 5:30 – 7:30 PM (PKT)

In the wake of nearly two centuries of colonial rule, South Asian artists and architects forged new paths, rejecting British forms while engaging global modernism to reclaim national identity. From the Progressive Artists Group in Bombay and its counterparts in West Pakistan to the social realist masters of Bangladesh and the bold concrete visions of Yasmeen Lari, Mazharul Islam and Raj Rewal, discover how post independence creative movements balanced international currents with indigenous materials and cultural motifs.

Join our panel as they:
- Unpack the legacy of abstraction, solid colour and geometric form in decolonial art.
- Explore iconic architectural projects, from Pakistan’s modernist campuses to India’s once-proud Hall of Nations, and their contested heritage today.
- Debate art and architecture’s continuing role in shaping South Asian socio political narratives.

Session 1: Architecture, Modern Heritage and Urbanism: Spaces of Power and Identity in South Asia

Date & Time: Monday, 7 July 2025 | 5:00 – 7:00 PM (PKT)

From Chandigarh’s concrete landmarks to Islamabad’s orderly grid, post 1947 capitals were envisioned as monuments to sovereignty and modernity. Yet these state led projects often relied on inherited colonial planning logics - centralised, uniform and top down - leaving behind patterns of exclusion and spatial inequality that persist in today’s slum clusters and peripheral settlements.

Join our panel of architects, planners and scholars as they:
- Trace how modernist ideals and foreign expertise shaped South Asia’s new urban centres
- Examine the disconnect between symbolic nation-building and lived urban realities
- Discuss the ongoing legacies of colonial frameworks in our cities’ form, identity and contested public spaces
