APWA was founded as a non-profit and non-political welfare organization in Feb 1949 by Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan the wife of Pakistan’s first Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan. She pioneered the first women’s movement in Pakistan and is credited with establishing the country’s oldest N.G.O. Over the years APWA has grown as an effective tool for addressing social and economic issues, gender injus

tices/discrimination and inadequate participation of women in the national/local decision making process. APWA has consultative status with the Government of Pakistan, Category 11 with the United Nations and the ECOSCO. It cooperates with its specialized agencies through its special section of the United Nations. APWA holds a local as well as global presence through its branches and international/national affiliations. It focuses on the following sectors:
