A man slaughters a big cow, starts the grill, and says to his daughter, “Daughter, go call our relatives, friends, and neighbors to join us… We’re having a celebration!”
The daughter goes out to the street and shouts, “Please help! My father’s house is on fire!”
After some time, only a few people come out to help, while many others act like they didn’t hear anything. The ones who came stay, eat, and enjoy the food until late.

The father, confused, looks around and says to his daughter, “I don’t know most of these people. Some I’ve never seen before. Where are our friends, family, and neighbors?”
The daughter calmly replies, “The people who came didn’t come for a party. They came because they thought we were in trouble. These are the people who care about us. These are the ones who deserve to celebrate with us.”

Lesson: The ones who don’t show up when you’re struggling don’t deserve to be with you when you succeed.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴?

Your first mistake is thinking that motivation is what you need.

Motivation is a myth. Motivation is transient. Motivation is capricious—it arrives as quickly as it leaves. If you're waiting for motivation to get you whatever it is you want, you'll be waiting your whole life.

Anyone who has ever achieved, struggled, or done anything truly hard that required repeated effort and showing up day after day will tell you it wasn't motivation that did it. Whenever my alarm goes off at 6 am and I have to get up for a 15km run, go to the gym, work on my side hustle, better myself in some way, or pursue a goal—it isn't motivation that gets me out of bed; it's discipline.

Discipline is nothing more or less than the habit of doing what you should be doing when you don't want to. No one wants to get out of a cosy, warm bed early in the morning—everyone feels the urge to roll over and cuddle up. What separates those who get up and get after it isn't motivation—it's the cultivated habit of doing what needs to be done without excuses. It's the cultivated habit of expecting more from yourself and forcing your body to comply.

Motivation is an excuse. "You're so motivated," "I just don't have the motivation for that"—these excuses reassure people they're just unlucky, they're missing something essential that those other people have.

Bu****it.

Motivation buys you the shoes. Discipline puts in the miles. Instead, ask yourself: How do I get disciplined? Simple.

Simplify: Cut out all the nonsense from your life.
Unplug: Disconnect yourself from everything that distracts you.
Focus: What are you aiming for? What are you willing to do to get it?
All of this has been known since the beginning of time. Aristotle wrote: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

Discipline is what habitually gets you out of bed at 6 am before you have a chance to question whether it's a good idea to do so.
