Influencers and content creators have a powerful voice in Pakistan, but public health messaging must be grounded in clinical reality, not outdated misinformation.

A recent viral post claims that va**ng causes EVALI, scarring of airways, and severe lung destruction. Let's look at what the actual medical consensus says:

The CDC conclusively showed that EVALI was an acute poisoning outbreak caused by Vitamin E Acetate in black-market THC oils, not legal ni****ne vapes.

There are zero documented cases of "popcorn lung" caused by e-ci******es, as confirmed by Cancer Research UK.

Major clinical studies and public health bodies like the UK Government and the Cochrane Database acknowledge that non-combustible alternatives carry only a small fraction of the risk of burning to***co.

With 22.7 million to***co users and 163,000 annual deaths in Pakistan, our goal must be reducing the lethal harm of combustible ci******es. Fear-mongering only protects the cigarette monopoly.

Va**ng may look harmless, but your lungs may be paying a much higher price than you realize.

Doctors and researchers are increasingly warning that e cigarette aerosols can expose the lungs to ni****ne, ultrafine particles, toxic chemicals, flavoring agents, and metals such as nickel, tin, and lead. These substances can travel deep into the respiratory system and trigger inflammation or damage delicate lung tissue.

Medical reports have linked va**ng to serious conditions including EVALI, a potentially life threatening lung injury that can cause breathing failure. Researchers have also documented cases involving scarring and narrowing of the smallest airways, which may lead to lasting breathing problems.

The biggest concern is that va**ng is still relatively new compared with traditional smoking, which means scientists are continuing to study what years of regular exposure could do to the body.

Stopping va**ng may reduce future risk, but some lung damage can be difficult to reverse.

The message is simple. Va**ng is not just harmless v***r. Every inhale exposes your lungs to substances they were never designed to handle.

This Independence Day, let's think about the kind of Pakistan we want to build.

A Pakistan where better alternatives are accessible, informed choices are encouraged, and we keep moving towards a flourishing, Smoke-Free Pakistan.

For adults who smoke, switching away from ci******es and towards better alternatives can be a step towards reducing exposure to the harmful chemicals produced by combustion.

Let's make the switch. Let's move beyond ci******es. Let's move towards a Smoke-Free Pakistan.

Happy Independence Day! 🇵🇰

The first cigarette can become more than just a first cigarette.

For many smokers, to***co use begins before adulthood. That makes prevention especially important not just by telling young people what to avoid, but by ensuring they understand the risks before experimentation turns into dependence.

Young people deserve accurate information about to***co, supported by open conversations that help them understand the consequences of starting.

Prevention starts before the first cigarette. Awareness starts before dependence.

This International Youth Day, let's protect the next generation from to***co.

What changes a decision? Motivation or awareness?

A community-based study in Gujranwala found that 86% of smokers wanted to quit, yet only 8% knew smoke-free alternatives existed.

When people were given evidence-based information, the conversation changed and so did many of their decisions.

Sometimes, the first step isn't changing behaviour.
It's changing what people know.

Progress isn't measured by time. It's measured by outcomes.

Ten years passed. Yet the percentage of smokers in Pakistan trying to quit barely changed.

That raises an important question: are we giving adult smokers the information they need to make informed decisions?

Quitting smoking remains the best choice. But for adults who would otherwise continue smoking, To***co Harm Reduction offers another evidence-based approach by increasing awareness of smoke-free alternatives that can reduce exposure to harmful chemicals produced by cigarette smoke.

Better information leads to better conversations. Better conversations can support better outcomes.

As more countries explore to***co harm reduction, experts continue to examine how evidence-based approaches can complement broader to***co control efforts and help reduce smoking-related harm.

In this article, Dr. Aftab Ahmed Khan, a family physician and a public health expert quotes why greater awareness, informed choices, and credible science are essential to advancing the conversation around to***co harm reduction.

A thought to consider: Can better information lead to better health decisions?
