سرزمین پختونخواہ کا پہلا حقیقی مسلمان پختون بادشاہ سلطان پکھل سواتی ہے جنہوں نے سوات میں پختون آباد کئے۔ ان کی دور حکمرانی 1009 عیسوی سے شروع ہوئی تھی اور ان کے بعد متعدد سواتی سلاطین نے پانچ سو سال تک اس خطے پر حکمرانی کی۔
