I am in Kazmain, the land of profound peace. Over the years I have seen how the holy shrine has evolved its water refilling systems. Last year I noticed many women were carrying large bottles with them but the refill stations were not designed for filling bottles. This has also been our suggestion in all meetings for Karbala and Najaf. This time I am pleased to see a better design which makes refilling bottles easier.

In other news, I received my climate risk management certification from The University of Oxford today. Alhumdolillah.

300,000 single-use plastic cups avoided. In one Mawkib. In two days.

Bithat Trust Bithat Media , led by Molana Mehdi Hassan Kazmi Syed Hasan Mehdi Kazmi hosts over 150,000 visitors during the 9th and 10th of Muharram , one of the largest Mawkib and Karbala displays in the region. Last year they reduced single-use plastic cups. This year they replaced them completely, with terracotta.

No commercial incentive.
Just a community that decided the land of Imam Hussain (a) deserves better.

This is happening in rural and urban spaces, in developing and under-resourced communities. And it is exactly the kind of leadership the world's largest pilgrimage needs.

We are all, in the end, walking towards a Sustainable Arbaeen. 🌿

Dr Subeika Rizvi Subeika Rizvi carries her reusable thermos to avoid single use plastic bottles during her Muharram lectures at Jaffari Center of Atlanta. She wants to leaves hearts inspired without a plastic trail that will cause suffering to planet and all being after lectures end.

اجعل مجلسك خالياً من البلاستيك في شهر محرم هذا.

هذا دليلك البسيط.

بدلاً من الأكواب البلاستيكية، استخدموا الأكواب المصنوعة من الفولاذ أو النحاس أو الزجاج. اطلبوا من الحسينية الاستثمار في طقم يدوم لسنوات.

بدلاً من الزجاجات البلاستيكية، قم بتركيب موزع مياه قابل لإعادة الاستخدام. وقد قامت العتبة العباسية بذلك بالفعل.

بدلاً من الأطباق التي تُستخدم لمرة واحدة، استثمر في أطباق وأواني قابلة لإعادة الاستخدام للتقديم وتناول الطعام.

بدلاً من استخدام حاويات وأكياس الطعام البلاستيكية، استخدم صواني فولاذية أو عبوات قابلة للتحلل الحيوي لطعام التبرك.

بدلاً من أدوات المائدة البلاستيكية، احمل معك طقم أدوات مائدة قابل لإعادة الاستخدام، أو وفر أطقمًا من الفولاذ للضيوف.

بدلاً من اللافتات المصنوعة من مادة PVC أو البوليستر، استخدم لافتات قماشية مرسومة يدويًا، فالصور المقدسة على لافتات المجالس تجعل من الصعب تخزين المواد البلاستيكية أو التخلص منها أو إعادة استخدامها.

بدلاً من الأكياس البلاستيكية، استخدموا الأكياس القماشية لتوزيع البركة، فالكيس الواحد يدوم لسنوات.
