Step Into Her Story:
Week 18 – Year 82
The 2009–2010 League year introduced a unique approach to General Membership Meetings by hosting them at venues throughout Oklahoma City. These gatherings provided Members with opportunities to learn more about the League’s longstanding influence on the city’s cultural, educational and civic institutions while experiencing firsthand the organizations that had benefited from JLOC’s leadership and service. At each meeting, the leader of the host organization the Membership, sharing insights into the mission and impact. Members gained a deeper appreciation for the League’s role in establishing, supporting and sustaining such vital institutions as the Oklahoma Museum of Art, Lyric Theatre, Infant Crisis Services, the Oklahoma History Center, the Oklahoma State Capitol, Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Oklahoma National Memorial & Museum. Together, these contributions helped shape the growth and character of Oklahoma City over eight decades.
The League also continued its 10-year commitment to literacy. In partnership with the Oklahoma City Thunder, members helped stock the Rolling Thunder bus with books and volunteered at local schools, where Thunder players read to children and each child received a book of their own. The League further promoted literacy by hosting Reading Day at the Governor’s Mansion. Members also participated in the grand reopening and ribbon-cutting of the newly renovated Boys & Girls Club. Additionally, the League welcomed patients and their siblings to the opening of The Zone, an interactive play area designed to provide a welcoming and engaging space for families receiving care at OU Children’s Hospital.
Year 82 marked an important milestone with the completion and installation of the History of Women in Volunteerism exhibit at the Oklahoma History Center. President Ann Cameron and Sustaining Advisor to the Board of Directors Kris Frankfurt spearheaded this meaningful project, celebrating 80 years of the Junior League of Oklahoma City’s contributions to the community.
