Exciting News in European Healthcare! 🌟

On January 12, 2025, across reached a significant milestone as the EU came into effect. This regulation introduces joint clinical assessments ( ) at the EU level, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and efficiency in evaluating innovative health technologies.

This milestone is set to deliver substantial benefits. will enjoy improved access to cutting-edge treatments, while innovators will find the process more streamlined, with less redundant work. Health systems will also benefit from more consistent and evidence-based decision-making.

The EU Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi, emphasized the importance of this regulation: "European patients need quicker access to life-saving, and , and we are one step closer to making this a reality."

The goal is to ensure these rules are fully implemented across the EU, leading to better resource utilization, faster market entry for , lower costs, and less bureaucratic hassle.

🌍🚨 Global Health Crises Alert

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm by launching a US$ 1.5 billion global appeal to tackle the increasing convergence of “unprecedented” global health crises.

The WHO Health Emergency Appeal ( ) is aimed at providing urgent to more than 300 million people affected by 42 ongoing . These include 17 grade three crises, the most severe emergencies that require the highest level of response, such as outbreaks, conflict-related trauma, and .

“This appeal is about saving lives, protecting health, and providing hope where it is needed most,” said WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus last Thursday, noting that the emergencies are “relentless, overlapping, and intensifying”.

Climate change, conflict, displacement and disease outbreaks are the four main challenges highlighted in the appeal which are “responsible for fuelling deeper, longer lasting health crises and putting the world’s most vulnerable at greater risk”. Among the regions most in need are conflict zones, such as , the occupied territory, and the Democratic Republic of the .

The Thalassaemia International Federation - TIF is actively supporting the HEA and is calling on donors and partners to contribute to this significant cause. TIF would also like to congratulate the WHO and its Director-General, who continue their vital work on the frontlines to close the growing gap between global needs and available resources, ensuring that no one is left behind.
