Celebrating PUCCAR: Climate Action Through People, Partnerships and Community

Shehersaaz marked the project achievement celebrations of the Project for Urban Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience (PUCCAR) at PNCA, Islamabad, bringing together government representatives, development partners, communities, families and stakeholders to celebrate the collective efforts behind a more climate-ready future.

Implemented by Shehersaaz in partnership with UN-Habitat and with financial support from the Adaptation Fund, PUCCAR delivered practical, community-level climate adaptation solutions across 15 Union Councils and Neighbourhood Councils in Rawalpindi and Nowshera.

The project installed 5,060 Rainwater Harvesting Units, enabling 7,570,450 litres of rainwater storage and benefiting 97,867 people. It also trained 16,662 individuals, supported interventions in 60 educational institutions and facilitated 80 youth-led climate adaptation projects.

The celebration brought together a diverse programme of messages, performances and community experiences. Theatre Wallay took the stage with the Urdu social play “Pani Sab Ka Aik,” directed by Ahad Ali Siddiqui, using theatre to highlight water conservation, responsible resource use, community participation and climate-responsive living.

The event also featured “Boond Boond Pani – Ik Nai Kahani,” an exclusive musical piece written, composed and performed by Mr. Furqan Ahmad, a visually impaired artist from FA Virtual Studio, with Ms. Anahita Sajjad also contributing her voice to the production.

The “Voices from Communities” session brought together representatives and community members from Rawalpindi, Nowshera and Rescue 1122, offering a space to share experiences from the field. The programme also included messages from representatives of UN-Habitat, the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination and Shehersaaz, followed by certificate distribution and recognition of the people who contributed to the project.

It was an evening of reflection, recognition and celebration, bringing together the many faces of PUCCAR and the collective effort behind its work.

When Climate Action Takes the Stage

As part of the PUCCAR Project achievement Ceremony, Shehersaaz, in collaboration with Theatre Wallay, presented the Urdu social theatre performance “Pani Sab Ka Aik Hai” at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), Islamabad.

Through humour, familiar situations and powerful theatrical storytelling, the 20-minute performance brought the realities of water conservation, rainwater harvesting, waste management, greener communities and collective responsibility to life.

Rather than simply talking about climate resilience, Pani Sab Ka Aik Hai invited the audience to reflect on a simple idea: the way we use, conserve and share our resources is a responsibility we all carry.

The performance complemented the wider work of the Project for Urban Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience (PUCCAR), implemented by Shehersaaz in partnership with UN-Habitat, with financial support from the Adaptation Fund, which has supported practical climate adaptation solutions across Rawalpindi and Nowshera.

The play was directed by Ahad Ali Siddiqui, with performances by Fizza Hasan, Faizan Ahmed, Tayyab Aly, Ayesha Ayub and Azam Hameed, and technical support from Fahad Tariq, Zainab Hasan and Mustafa Hasan.

Through theatre, the message was brought closer to the audience: climate action is not only about infrastructure and interventions, but also about people, participation and everyday choices.

Implemented by Shehersaaz in partnership with UN-Habitat and with financial support from the Adaptation Fund, PUCCAR worked to address water scarcity and strengthen community-level climate adaptation in Rawalpindi and Nowshera.

Understanding the challenge is the first step toward building the right solution.

Shehersaaz facilitated a field assessment with the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) in Rawalpindi, bringing technical expertise closer to the communities and locations where water and environmental challenges are experienced firsthand.

The joint team assessed a range of sites, including schools, open spaces, dry bore locations, drainage areas, community spaces, and wastewater-related sites, to develop a preliminary understanding of existing conditions.

The upcoming phase will take this work further through a detailed technical survey supported by specialized tools and equipment. The findings will help identify practical opportunities for sustainable water management, improved urban resilience, and climate-responsive interventions.

Building a water-secure and climate-resilient future through knowledge, assessment, and action.

Shehersaaz recently facilitated a field visit in Rawalpindi with the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) to conduct a preliminary technical assessment of water- and wastewater-related challenges and opportunities within targeted communities.

Shehersaaz Engineers Abdullah and Shakeel accompanied the PCRWR experts during visits to schools, open spaces, dry bore sites, drainage and surface areas, wastewater-related locations, and community spaces.

The assessment is an important first step toward understanding existing conditions and identifying technically viable solutions. A subsequent visit will involve specialized tools and equipment for a more detailed technical survey of the identified sites.

Through partnerships, technical expertise, and community-focused action, Shehersaaz continues to connect local challenges with practical and sustainable solutions—strengthening urban resilience and contributing to a more sustainable future for communities.
