A child has mental health, emotions, and needs that begin shaping from the earliest stages of life. In this podcast, we explore Responsive Caregiving and why understanding a child’s signals, needs, and emotions is essential for healthy development.

The discussion explains the three basic elements of responsive caregiving and how parents and caregivers can pay attention to what a child is communicating, understand those signals, and respond appropriately. It also looks at the deep connection between a newborn and their mother, including familiar voices, smells, and sounds that provide a sense of comfort and security.

Dawn Media, in collaboration with other key partners, organized the two-day Act for Nutrition Conference under its “Advocating Change Together” (ACT) initiative, held on September 2–3, 2026, in Islamabad. Ms. Khadija Khan, CEO of PAFEC, was invited as a panelist for the discussion on “Multi-Sectoral Action for Nutrition: From Policy to Implementation.” When asked why nutrition should be viewed as part of a child’s overall development, Ms. Khadija Khan emphasized that nutrition is fundamental to children’s brain, physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development. Drawing on the WHO–UNICEF Nurturing Care Framework, she stressed that interconnected factors, including maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, caregiver well-being, and a healthy, stimulating environment, must be addressed together.

On top priority for multisectoral action for nutrition: Ms. Khadija called for “making convergence real where the child lives,” through coordinated nurturing-care services, aligned budgets, clear accountability, and effective referrals. She highlighted PAFEC’s role in connecting ECD practitioners, educators, parents, civil society, and other sectors, stressing that policy becomes implementation when families receive coherent support and children at risk are identified and assisted.

April 7 marked the first day of the highly anticipated 5th International Conference on Early Childhood Development. As much as we miss those two eventful days, we’re taking a look back at the pertinent discourse, meaningful conversations, and valuable insights the conference brought to the forefront.

The opening ceremony featured a thought-provoking keynote address on “Investing in Early Childhood Development – Building Human Capital,” delivered by Dr. Zafar Mirza, Former Federal Minister for Health, Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination. The address emphasized that ECD must move beyond technical discussions to become a fiscal and political priority, supported by stronger governance, equitable resource allocation, and sustained investment in human development. He stressed that investing in children is essential for Pakistan’s long-term social and economic progress.

At the 𝗥𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲, in collaboration with The Asia Foundation, Pakistan Alliance for Early Childhood, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗹𝗴𝗶𝘁 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, a 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 & 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 was successfully conducted as part of the 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

The training was successfully delivered across 𝗚𝗶𝗹𝗴𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 to facilitate participation from schools across the district.

Early Childhood Development begins much earlier than we often think — even before birth. In this episode, we explore holistic child development with Dr. Saba Shuja, discussing how pregnancy, family, environment, and a child’s early experiences can shape their physical, cognitive, language, and social development.

We also talk about why the first 2–3 years are so important, what sensitive periods mean, and where Pakistan still needs to improve in supporting early childhood development.

Through Pakistan Alliance for Early Childhood, one of our entities, Rupani Foundation Pakistan, is publishing and distributing 𝟰𝟬𝟬+ 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗿𝗱𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 in government schools across 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗚𝗶𝗹𝗴𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘇𝗮.
