Pakistan Takes Part in 11th International Conference on Protecting Family and Identity
Pakistan participated in the 11th International Conference organised by Egypt’s Dar Al Ifta and the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, which opened in Cairo on Wednesday.
The two-day conference is being held under the theme: “Family Challenges Amidst Major Transformations: A Fatwa-Based Approach to Protecting the Family, Envisioning its Future, and Preserving Identity.”
Pakistan was represented by His Eminence Dr Mufti Akeel-Ur-Rehman Pirzada, Grand Mufti of Islamabad and Chairman of the Ulama Aman (Peace) Committee Pakistan.
Speaking to the media during the opening session, Dr Mufti Akeel-Ur-Rehman Pirzada said that the conference comes at a critical time, as Muslim and Arab families are facing rapid social, cultural and technological transformations. He noted that protecting the family and preserving its identity had become an increasingly important challenge requiring collective and concerted efforts.
The Grand Mufti emphasised that Islam has established the family on strong foundations of affection, compassion and mercy. However, he warned that societies today face unprecedented intellectual and value-based challenges, including the dilution of authentic concepts of identity, the disruption of sound human nature, the complex impact of the digital environment and cyberspace, reluctance towards marriage, the growing acceptance of divorce, and increasing challenges relating to parenting and family life.
He further noted that studies and statistical evidence from across the Muslim and Arab world indicate that a significant proportion of divorces occur during the early years of marriage, exceeding between 45 and 60 per cent in some countries.
The Grand Mufti stressed that all religions encourage the protection, support and strengthening of the family, recognising the important and complementary roles of fathers, mothers and children in establishing a stable and healthy family structure.
He also praised Egypt’s Dar Al Ifta for organising the conference and commended the strong participation of distinguished scholars and experts, noting that their contributions add considerable academic and intellectual value to such international gatherings.
The conference aims to strengthen the role of fatwa and religious institutions in protecting and supporting the family while developing guidance and fatwa-based approaches that combine Islamic principles with an understanding of contemporary realities and future challenges.
Its agenda addresses a wide range of issues concerning the future of the family, including marriage and divorce, family guidance, social and cultural transformations, the impact of digital technologies, parenting, and the preservation of identity and values.
The conference has brought together muftis, ministers, scholars, religious leaders, academics, intellectuals and experts from around the world, alongside public figures, government officials and specialists concerned with family and social issues.
Pakistan’s participation in this important international forum reflects the country’s continued commitment to promoting strong family values, preserving religious and cultural identity, and addressing the emerging challenges facing families in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world. The conference provides a valuable platform for scholars, religious leaders and policymakers to exchange ideas and develop practical, effective and sustainable approaches to safeguarding the institution of the family for present and future generations.
