Hashoo Foundation, in partnership with the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), is carrying out the rehabilitation of a 5 KM irrigation channel in Village Gucher, UC Botogah/Khiner, District Diamer, Gilgit-Baltistan.

The rehabilitation work aims to improve access to clean and safe water, strengthen local irrigation infrastructure, and support sustainable water management for the community.

Naveed Gul, Director, Environmental Protection Agency Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Malakand, shares his reflections on a workshop organized by Hashoo Foundation, in collaboration with UNDP Pakistan, under the project “Empowering Women for Peace and Environmental Justice in Swat,” focusing on women’s empowerment, climate change, resilience, and environmental justice.

He highlights the importance of strengthening collaboration with government departments, increasing awareness, and encouraging women’s participation in addressing climate-related challenges—especially in flood-prone areas of the Malakand Division.

At a panel discussion at the University of Swat, young students engaged with senior professionals and professors on climate change, environmental justice, and climate security.

Sajal Rehman, a BS Computer Science student, shares how the session helped young people understand their role in addressing climate change—and how small steps can lead to big change.

The panel discussion was organized by Hashoo Foundation, with the support of UNDP Pakistan, under the project “Empowering Women for Peace and Environmental Justice in Swat.”

Women, Peace & Environmental Justice in Swat
How can women play a stronger role in building peaceful communities while responding to the growing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation?
Hashoo Foundation, with the support of UNDP Pakistan, organized a panel discussion at the University of Swat on “Women’s Role in Peacebuilding, Climate Change, Environmental Justice & Climate Security in Swat,” under the project “Empowering Women for Peace and Environmental Justice in Swat.”
The event brought together more than 40 participants representing government institutions, academia, civil society, media, youth, Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs), religious leadership, and local communities, creating an inclusive platform for dialogue on the interconnected challenges of peace, climate change, and environmental justice in Swat.
The panel Dr. Arshad Ali Khan - Registrar University of Swat, Dr Naveed Gul - Director, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Malakand, Mr. Muhammad Asif and Ms. Mahinoor - Environmental Human Rights Defenders, Dr. Shah Muhammad Khan - Social and Political Activist and CSO Representative, Mr. Asif Javed - Environmental Media Representative and Social Media Influencer, Dr. Shafiqa Bushra - Female Religious Scholar and Community Representative, and Mr. Jalal Khan - Advocate & project EHRD moderating the discussion.
The conversation highlighted the importance of women’s leadership in peacebuilding, environmental governance, climate action, community resilience, and inclusive decision-making. Panellists also reflected on the role of government institutions, academia, civil society, media, EHRDs, and communities in creating stronger linkages between environmental protection and sustainable peace.
A key message emerging from the discussion was that environmental justice and peacebuilding are closely connected. Addressing climate and environmental challenges requires not only institutional action but also meaningful community participation, particularly the inclusion of women in dialogue, decision-making, and locally led solutions.
The initiative was carried out with the support of UNDP Pakistan, with valuable support and coordination from Ms. Sadia Bangash, Project Analyst, UNDP Pakistan, in advancing the project’s objectives of women’s empowerment, peacebuilding, and environmental justice in Swat.
Through such platforms, Hashoo Foundation, with the support of UNDP Pakistan, continues to promote meaningful dialogue, strengthen stakeholder collaboration, and amplify the role of women and EHRDs as important contributors to peaceful, inclusive, and climate-resilient communities.
Together, we can empower women and contribute towards a peaceful, inclusive, environmentally just, and climate-resilient Swat.

The Hashoo Foundation Gilgit team, in collaboration with the IOM Pakistan team, conducted a joint field assessment of flood-affected households in Naltar Valley, evaluating the extent of damage to residential houses and the situation of affected families.

✅ Naltar Dalan: 29 affected households identified
✅ Bishgiri Naltar: 8 household damages verified

These findings will support the identification of immediate needs, guide further coordination and response planning, and inform the provision of timely relief and recovery assistance to affected families.

Stronger Policies. Stronger Partnerships. Resilient Communities.

Hashoo Foundation, in collaboration with Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund under the Local Area Development Program, brought together government departments, development partners and key stakeholders in Gilgit-Baltistan to review existing policies and promote sustainable ecosystem management.

From environment and forests to agriculture, fisheries and livestock, the discussion focused on practical solutions, stronger coordination and sustainable practices for resilient communities and ecosystems.

The IOM Pakistan and Hashoo Foundation team carried out the second day of field visits to flood-affected areas of Diamer, meeting with affected families to assess damage and identify immediate needs, alongside representatives of the Tehsil Office.

The visits were successfully completed:
✅ Gieni: 1 household
✅ Gas Bala: 4 households
✅ B***r: 4 households
✅ Guner Farm: 15 households

Several households were found to have sustained significant flood damage. Extremely vulnerable families including poor widows were identified during the assessment and flagged for further consideration and support.

Representatives of the Tehsil Office remained present throughout, providing valuable support and coordination.
