Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid (SHARP) is a non-governmental organization, which is striving for a human rights friendly Pakistan since 1999 by working for the well being of vulnerable segments of the society through various means, be it advocacy, community services, capacity building, emergency response and etc. SHARP has had experience of working with various population groups (refu

gees, IDPs, women, juvenile delinquents, street children, prisoners and etc.) in different thematic areas including Protection, Child Protection, Emergency Response, Advocacy, Education, Infrastructure development, health, and other rights based approaches throughout the country. With its head office situated in Islamabad, SHARP has offices in Lahore, Karachi, Mianwali, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Haripur and Timergara. All the initiatives carried out by SHARP focus on ensuring equal opportunities for the deprived segments of the society through improved access to justice. SHARP concentrates on building capacities, ensuring promotion of human rights and access to justice by developing linkages and narrowing the gap between the deprived sections of the society and government institutions like law enforcement agencies, police, judiciary, government machinery etc that are responsible for providing justice and rights to the poor and needy segments of the society.

A vibrant celebration of diplomacy and cultural exchange marked the Australia Day in Spring event hosted by the Australian High Commission in Islamabad, where SHARP CEO Mr. Mudassar Javed joined distinguished international guests.

During the event, he engaged with H.E. Mr. Timothy Kane, High Commissioner of Australia to Pakistan, Mr. Arno Kirchhof, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Islamabad, Ms. Harriet Roos, Counsellor (Development) and Head of Cooperation at the High Commission of Canada in Pakistan, as well as diplomats from the Swiss and Australian Embassies, along with representatives from civil society and the media.

The gathering served as an important platform for strengthening diplomatic ties, fostering dialogue, and celebrating shared values of cooperation, diversity, and mutual respect among international partners.

In a continued effort to advance strategic partnerships that strengthen protection and inclusion for marginalized and at-risk communities, SHARP CEO Mr. Mudassar Javed, along with the programme team, held a constructive meeting with the Community World Service Asia team to explore joint opportunities in protection, education, migration governance, and psychosocial support for refugees and displaced populations.

During the meeting, Mr. Mudassar highlighted SHARP’s ongoing humanitarian response for refugees, including psychosocial support services, free legal aid, and safe and dignified career pathways through the Talent Beyond Boundaries (TBB) program. The discussion also emphasized SHARP’s broader interventions on women’s empowerment, access to justice, protection of persons in detention, youth engagement for peace and interfaith harmony, and evidence-based responses to emerging migration challenges.

The Community World Service Asia team shared their community-driven approach, focusing on psychosocial support, education, dignity-centered programming, emergency response, health, livelihoods, protection, inclusion, and meaningful community participation.

Both organizations expressed their shared commitment to deepen collaboration and advance sustainable, rights-based, and people-centered solutions for communities in need, with an agreement to further formalize this partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future.

A proud moment for SHARP as Ms. Memoona Batool Khan, Project Director- KPK, has been nominated by the Law, Parliamentary Affairs & Human Rights Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as a Member of the Provincial Steering Committee for the implementation of the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP & BHR) for a three-year term.

Her nomination reflects confidence in her expertise, leadership, and longstanding contribution to human rights, protection, and policy engagement. It also underscores SHARP-Pakistan’s growing role in supporting institutional reforms and advancing human rights governance in Pakistan.

In a continued effort to strengthen coordinated civil society action on migration, SHARP CEO Mr. Mudassar Javed, as Co-Chair of the Civil Society Alliance on Migration (C-SAM), convened a meeting with partners to advance preparations for the C-SAM launch and develop the concept note.

The meeting reflected strong collective engagement, with valuable inputs from all partners contributing to the development of a coordinated, rights-based framework for migration governance. Under its EU-funded project, “Enhancing Access to Justice and Protection for Vulnerable Detainees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan,” SHARP organized a one-day capacity-building training at Peshawar Barracks for prison staff from various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The training focused on International Human Rights Law, safeguards against torture, fair trial standards, humane treatment of detainees, and prisoners’ rights, reinforcing SHARP’s commitment to promoting rights-based prison management across KP.

Addressing the participants, Mr. Syed Liaquat Banori, Chairman SHARP, emphasized the importance of institutional reforms and protecting the dignity and rights of detainees through collaborative efforts.

In his remarks, Mr. Rehan Gul Khattak, IG Prisons KP, appreciated the initiative and highlighted the need for continued professional capacity-building for prison staff in line with international standards.

Mr. Amin Shuaib, DIG Prisons KP, noted that such trainings play a vital role in strengthening knowledge, improving prison practices, and promoting humane treatment within detention facilities.

Participants were sensitized on key international frameworks, including the Nelson Mandela Rules, UDHR, UNCAT, and ICCPR, equipping prison officials with practical knowledge to uphold justice, dignity, and human rights in prison facilities.

Strengthening justice systems through innovation and institutional reform, SHARP CEO Mr. Mudassar Javed attended the formal handover ceremony of the Prison Management Information System (PMIS) under the European Union-funded , implemented in partnership with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Government of Balochistan.

Operational across 13 prison facilities in Balochistan, PMIS strengthens transparent, efficient, and humane prison management through digital transformation, improved coordination, and robust record management aligned with the Nelson Mandela Rules.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment to accountability, institutional efficiency, and a more integrated criminal justice system that better serves prisoners and their families.

Strengthening collaborative efforts on human rights and refugee protection, SHARP in partnership with UNHCR conducted a one-day police training workshop on “Human Rights & Refugee Laws” under SHARP–ALAC–III in Chakwal, aimed at enhancing the capacity of law enforcement officials on key protection frameworks.

The session was inaugurated by Ms. Amina Taj, who welcomed the participants, appreciated their engagement, and outlined SHARP’s mandate along with the objectives of the training.

In line with UNHCR-recommended methodology, pre- and post-training assessments were conducted to evaluate participants’ knowledge and measure the impact of the training session.

Mr. Aatif Afzal, Project Director (ICT), delivered a comprehensive presentation on Human Rights, focusing on the concept of rights, their key characteristics, and their significance in ensuring dignity, equality, and protection under the law.

Ms. Ghazala Mirza (UNHCR) emphasized the importance of human rights-based approaches in refugee protection and highlighted the responsibility of law enforcement in upholding international protection standards.

The training concluded with strong engagement from police officials, reflecting enhanced understanding and strengthened awareness of human rights and refugee protection principles.

Under the supervision of Project Director – ICT, Mr. Aatif Afzal, internal coordination and review meetings were conducted with project teams focused on enhancing program performance, ensuring data accuracy, and strengthening organizational efficiency across all regions.

Mr. Aatif chaired a monthly coordination meeting to review progress across RDC Islamabad and Karachi; ALAC ICT, Lahore & Mianwali; and TBB teams. Key milestones included the successful departure of a five-member family to Australia under the TBB program and the completion of police training workshops in Mianwali and Lahore. The meeting also highlighted the shift toward digital innovation through the development of a mobile application to improve legal access, while emphasizing the need to scale up strategic litigation and strengthen upcoming outreach, training, and monitoring activities nationwide.

In another separate meeting with the Protection project team, periodic data along with interim reports were reviewed. Discussions focused on addressing data discrepancies, ensuring accurate reporting and proper segregation, and timely correction of errors. The session also emphasized strengthening inter-departmental coordination, professionalism, respectful communication, and teamwork to improve overall efficiency and service delivery.

SHARP also acknowledged the dedication and service of its staff as part of its culture of appreciation. A farewell was organized for Mr. Tausif, a valued team member, in recognition of his contributions and commitment to the organization.

These engagements reflected SHARP’s continued focus on strengthening internal systems, improving data quality, enhancing coordination, embracing digital innovation, and valuing staff contributions.

Creating pathways of hope through skills and opportunity, SHARP Pakistan’s TBB team conducted an outreach session in Mardan with 40 Afghan refugees, promoting safe and legal pathways to international employment.

Facilitated by Livelihood Assistant Shanila Zafar, the session provided practical guidance on the Talent Beyond Boundaries (TBB) program, including Talent Catalog registration, CV development, and interview preparation, equipping participants with the tools needed to access global job opportunities.

The interactive session encouraged open dialogue and active participation, enabling participants to engage in meaningful discussions and Q&A while strengthening their understanding of the TBB program's role in promoting legal mobility pathways for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
