"Dragonflies face increasing survival threats”

Dragonflies are more than beautiful insects flashing over ponds and canals. They are guardians of freshwater health. When dragonflies disappear, it is often a warning that wetlands are being pushed beyond safe limits by pollution, habitat loss, and water mismanagement.

“World Environment Day: Shahida Kausar Farooq calls for urgent climate action in Pakistan”

Islamabad: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Shahida Kausar Farooq, renowned environmentalist and Chairperson Subh-e-Nau, called for urgent and collective action to address Pakistan’s growing environmental challenges.

She stated that Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions. Rising temperatures, recurring floods, water scarcity, deforestation, and increasing air pollution are posing serious threats to public health, livelihoods, and sustainable development.

“World Environment Day is a reminder that environmental protection is not solely the responsibility of governments. Every citizen, institution, and community has a role to play in safeguarding our natural resources for future generations,” she said.

She appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir to take immediate steps to tackle the menace of climate change. Mrs. Farooq emphasized the need for stronger environmental policies, protection of forests, responsible water management, reduction of plastic pollution, and greater investment in renewable energy. She also highlighted the importance of engaging youth, educational institutions, civil society, and the private sector in climate action initiatives.

Calling for a nationwide commitment to environmental stewardship, she urged all stakeholders to translate awareness into action and work together to build a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient Pakistan.
