Under the Better Cotton Initiative project in Dera Ghazi Khan, RSPN's field teams have been working closely with farmers over the past months to promote simple, practical solutions that address climate challenges, improve soil health, and protect the environment.

We have prioritised soil testing, helping farmers understand their soil conditions and equipping them with the skills to carry out testing independently in the future.

In the cotton-growing regions of Punjab, extreme heat and drought during May and June put pressure on young crops. Frequent irrigation with brackish water increases soil salinity, harming long-term productivity.

To combat this, farmers have been trained in green manuring and intercropping techniques. These practices:
✔️ Improve soil fertility
✔️ Reduce the harmful effects of poor-quality water
✔️ Lower irrigation needs
✔️ Create a natural cooling effect for crops

In addition, through the BCI-GIF initiative, demo plots of improved seed varieties have been established. Farmers received hands-on guidance on seed selection, treatment, optimal seed rates, and maintaining proper plant populations.

We believe adoption becomes easy when farmers are engaged, guided clearly, and supported well. Together, we’re building a more resilient and sustainable future for cotton farming.

We are excited to share that our school enrolment campaign, launched with the new academic year under the Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN) and Education Cannot Wait supported First Emergency Response (FER): Pakistan Monsoon Floods project is now reaching its peak!

The RSPN along with our consortium partners NRSP - National Rural Support Programme, SRSP, Idara e Taleem o Aagahi ITA, and PAGE Pakistan are working closely with education departments, school councils, communities, parents, and students to bring out-of-school children back into classrooms.

Across 180 flood-affected government schools in Narowal, Sialkot, Chiniot, Jhang, and Swat, our education campaigners are actively engaging communities, through home visits, awareness sessions, enrolment walks, and creative campaigns. From bustling markets to village streets, children proudly carry enrolment placards, spreading a powerful message: education for every child.

Children are enrolling, communities are responding, and the message is spreading. Education officials have even called for campaign materials to be displayed at district offices, recognising the momentum we’ve built together.

The FER project aims to support 34,484 children, (60% girls and 10% children with disabilities), ensuring inclusive access to education.

The RSPN's BCI team has officially kicked off the new season’s field activities from March, guiding farmers to grow cotton in line with BCI principles.

Most farmers are preparing to sow advanced seed varieties that offer improved tolerance to pests, heat waves, and drought. These sessions are designed to support farmers in increasing cotton productivity while adopting sustainable practices.

The team is also providing guidance on soil testing to optimize fertilizer use with precision, and promoting the use of manure to enhance soil organic carbon.
Through a series of training sessions and practical demonstrations such as laser land levelling and green manuring, farmers are being equipped with the knowledge and tools to improve soil health, ensure a safer environment, and achieve sustainable, profitable cotton production.

To mark International Women’s Day, awareness and celebration events were organized across 20 Local Support Organizations (LSOs) in the target districts of Qambar Shahdadkot and Larkana under the project “Enhancing CSOs' Contributions to Local Governance and Improved Access of Women to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services and Rights.” The project is being implemented by RSPN, co-financed by the European Union.

Each event brought together over 60 participants, including community women, men, and adolescents. The gatherings featured engaging performances such as women’s sessions, adolescent-led discussions, songs, and speeches highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment through the recognition of their SRH rights.

Powerful tableau performances were also presented. A silent tableau on family planning conveyed the message “Khushal Khandan, Khushal Mustaqbil” (A Prosperous Family for a Prosperous Future), while another tableau emphasized the importance of knowledge about Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), especially for adolescents, in shaping a better future.

A community walk and rally further amplified the message of International Women’s Day. Women and community members raised slogans highlighting that the progress of women leads to the progress of the nation. Their voices reflected the project’s commitment to promoting justice, rights, and awareness around SRHR and advancing inclusive and equitable development for all.

Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day 2026 - themed: Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls. The Day invites us to rally with women and girls around the world to demand equal rights – and equal justice to enforce, exercise, and enjoy those rights.

Our team and beneficiaries of Rural Support Programmes Network’s (RSPN’s) Education Cannot Wait supported First Emergency Response (FER): Pakistan Monsoon Floods project believe that education is the key and panacea for awareness of rights, and attaining justice for women and girls through collective action.

That is why the FER project is committed to promoting girls’ and women’s equal access and participation in education, in project supported 108 girls’ government schools. We believe that educated, aware and empowered girls and women can attain, protect and promote their rights. The FER project is being implemented to support 34, 484 children, including 60% girls, and 10% children with disabilities (CWDs) in the flood affected 180 government schools in Narowal, Sialkot, Chinot and Jhang districts in Punjab and Swat in KP. 60% of the targeted 540 teachers, to be comprehensively trained through project are women.

Our project focuses on girls’ enrolment, provision of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) kits and sports and recreational activities for girls, and empowers them as leaders. RSPN and our consortium partners NRSP - National Rural Support Programme SRSP , Idara e Taleem o Aagahi ITA , and Pakistan Alliance for Girls Education - PAGE , in collaboration with the school education department and education stakeholders, remain committed to providing student centred, quality, inclusive education to girls for sustainable development.

Some stories don’t make headlines, but they change communities.

As we lead upto International Women’s Day, we recognise the role of women in cotton-growing communities in Pakistan. Through our Better Cotton Initiative Cotton work with NRSP - National Rural Support Programme in Dera Ghazi Khan, women farmers and workers are improving farming practices, participating in women-only learning groups, and accessing safer, more dignified work through Decent Work and leadership initiatives.

We are also supporting women to step into non-traditional roles in cotton farming, including marketing and participation in water (khaal) committees, strengthening their role in local decision-making.
At the same time, income diversification remains central to our approach. From livestock support and goat distribution to market linkages for women engaged in embroidery, these efforts are helping households build stable income beyond a single crop.
