We’re currently active in over a third of the country’s districts. VSO Pakistan developed the innovative National Youth Volunteering Programme for Development.

We’ve been working in Pakistan since 1987, building educated, healthy, and resilient communities and supporting people of Pakistan to develop sustainable livelihoods. Development works best when the people closest to a problem lead the response to it.

That idea ran through Power Shift, a recent training where young people from local civil society organisations worked on how to lead development in their own communities. Together they looked at who holds power and who tends to be left out, how to plan with the most marginalised in mind, and how to capture and tell the story of real change honestly.

The training also connected this work to VSO's wider direction, and to a strategy that puts locally led development, and the volunteers driving it, at its centre.

Most of us have a business idea. Few of us know where to start — especially when profit, people, and planet all have to add up.

VSO’s two-day Green Business Training gave young leaders from across Pakistan a framework to do exactly that. Here is what shifted for them.

Over two days, young people from various local civil society organisations came together for our Green Business training to work on enterprise that can support their organisations and respond to the environmental pressures facing their communities.

Participants moved from a rough idea to a worked-out plan: shaping a business model, thinking through how a green enterprise earns trust, and pitching it to the room. The focus stayed practical throughout, on green businesses that can stand on their own and contribute to climate resilience rather than depending on outside support to keep going.

One participant said she had never pictured herself running a business before. Another, already an entrepreneur, said she would now build the environmental impact of her work into whatever she plans next.

Today is World Refugee Day. For many displaced children, it marks one thing: being shut out of school before they ever reach a classroom.

Muhammad Arif knew those barriers first-hand. War forced his family out of Afghanistan when he was a boy, and as a migrant in Pakistan, going to school was anything but straightforward. He kept studying anyway. Then he set up a single room in a remote part of Quetta and began teaching the children facing the same barriers he had. VSO and Education Cannot Wait backed the work he had already started.

Zainab is studying for her FSc and already teaching around 44 children in her community as an Education Champion. She kept going through school when support at home was far from guaranteed, and she now wants every girl who sees her to believe the same is possible.

In her words: "If a girl wants, she can reach any level, and there's no profession she can't excel in."

Today marks the World Day Against Child Labour. In Pakistan, approximately 8.6 million children—almost one in ten—are engaged in labor rather than attending school.

Naila was one of them. At ten, she was taken out of school to embroider dresses for her family to sell.

Most child labour here doesn't look like a factory. It looks like this: a childhood spent earning instead of learning, and most of these children never finish school.

Naila is back now. She studies at a community learning centre in Balochistan that VSO supports with Education Cannot Wait, and the embroidery she was once made to do is turning into a skill she's choosing for herself. In her words: "I marched for myself. Now I am earning and learning together."

Education alone won't end child labour. Families need income and the law needs enforcement. But for a child like Naila, it's how she gets her future back. She wants to run her own business one day.

"Now parents themselves come to us, asking when the next enrolment will start."

Raheem Bibi is a volunteer in the VSO-supported Education Cannot Wait programme, running a learning centre in a rural community near Quetta. When she started, persuading families to send their children, especially their daughters, was slow and difficult work.

"At first, some families wouldn't open their doors. A few even set dogs on us to drive us away. It took years of returning before that changed."

The change came slowly. As children kept attending, parents saw how they behaved at home, and word moved between families. Now parents come to the centre themselves to ask when the next intake opens.

One volunteer kept showing up. The community did the rest. That is how a spark spreads.

This World Environment Day, we're asking everyone to name one change they're starting — or one they've already made, however small.

Because real change rarely starts big. It starts with one person who decides to act — and volunteering is how that decision turns into something lasting. Not handing communities a solution, but standing alongside them while they build their own.

That's what we see across Pakistan every day: ordinary people choosing to act, and inspiring the next person to do the same.

Muhammad Arif's journey was never easy. Displaced, determined, and driven by a single belief that education belongs to everyone. He built a school from scratch in an underserved community in Quetta, where access to clean water, shelter, and basic services remains a daily challenge.

With the support of VSO, Taraqqee Foundation, and Education Cannot Wait, Arif now ensures that girls and boys in his community have a place to learn, every single day.

Periods don't pause for disasters. Mahwari Justice is a youth-led initiative working at the intersection of menstrual and climate justice, making sure women and girls in disaster-affected communities have access to safe menstrual products, education, and their basic rights.

Through grassroots relief, policy advocacy, and community education, they are building a movement for menstrual justice that goes beyond emergency response.

We are proud to spotlight them as a VSO Pakistan partner. 💜
