The Gender Equity Grants Program (GEP) is a recently launched 40 million dollars USAID initiative in Pakistan, with the vision to generate widespread societal demand and commitment for a socially just, democratic, caring and gender-responsive society in Pakistan, where all citizens, women and men, are recognized as equal, with the right to lead their lives with self-respect and dignity. Individual
land Pakistan, with the partnership of Aurat Publication and Information Service Foundation, under USAID supported Gender Equity Program (GEP) in collaboration with The Asia Foundation, has initiated a project to sensitize the media personnel belonging to print and electronic media, regarding Gender Equality/Equity. It is envisioned that, the media will act as a tool for public outreach, to positively change the perception of the society, on gender equity and women empowerment. The Pakistani society has been plagued with the issue of gender inequality. It is a male dominated society, where women have been prevented to exercise their rights and attain their rightful place. They are subjected to gender based violence and honor killings, prevalent in the country. The representation of women in various fields has been to a minimum. The trend is not only present in the rural areas but also has its roots in the urban areas of the country. In these conditions, it is imperative that awareness and advocacy be carried out to highlight this issue.
