At the 79th World Health Assembly, Ayesha Raza Farooq welcomed the strong commitment and support for polio eradication from GPEI partners, Rotary International, and Member States, noting that seeing polio eradication remain high on the global health agenda further strengthens Pakistan’s resolve to end the disease.

She highlighted that the greatest strength of Pakistan’s polio programme is its female workforce, with women making up 60% of the country’s frontline workers who travel across communities to vaccinate and protect every child.

Thanks to their tireless efforts, Pakistan has made significant progress towards a polio-free future and remains committed to ensuring a safe and enabling environment for all frontline workers.

On the first day of the campaign aiming to vaccinate nearly 19 million children under five with the effective oral polio vaccine, representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), together with UNICEF Pakistan Representative Ms. Pernille Ironside and Area Coordinator WHO, Dr. Shumaila Rasool, visited the campaign activities at G-9 Medical Center, Islamabad.

The visit provided an opportunity to observe how vaccination teams work every day to safely deliver polio vaccines and help protect children from lifelong paralysis, while also engaging directly with health workers supporting the campaign, reviewing campaign plans, and interacting with children and caregivers.

Polio vaccines remain the most critical tool to stop poliovirus transmission and move the world closer to a future free from polio thus JICA’s continued support to Pakistan’s polio eradication program, remains critical in strengthening vaccination efforts and helping ensure every child is protected from lifelong paralysis.
