Have you ever wondered how global climate action actually gets funded?

It all comes down to a concept called Climate Finance. Climate finance refers to the necessary funding drawn from public, private, and alternative sources to help tackle the climate crisis head-on.

This financial support focuses on two major areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) and helping local communities adapt to environmental changes (adaptation). Beyond just lowering emissions, this funding is deeply connected to climate justice. It ensures that vulnerable nations receive the support they need to build resilient human and ecological systems.

The UNDP is playing a massive role in making this happen by connecting countries to global funds and supporting national finance strategies. In fact, they have already supported over 400 climate projects worth more than $3.5 billion worldwide.

By funding the future, we can turn broad climate goals into real, on-the-ground action for the communities that need it most.

As the national budget for 2026-27 is presented today, it is vital to discuss how Pakistan is managing its climate finance. Having strong environmental protection policies on paper means very little if they are not actively implemented to protect our communities.

Leading climate experts are pointing out major loopholes in our current approach:

+ Proposals to tax renewable energy create counterproductive hurdles for green energy adoption.
+ Out of 57 approved government projects last fiscal year, not a single one underwent the required climate risk screening.
+ Public funds are often allocated well before deciding if they will be spent on disaster mitigation, climate adaptation, or loss and damage.

Experts emphasise that we must move beyond basic budget tagging. Every government department needs to transition toward specific, verifiable, and climate-resilient projects that prioritise the protection of people, livelihoods, and infrastructure.

Weather patterns are shifting, and our communities are feeling the immediate impact.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recently issued a report forecasting delayed monsoons and extended heatwave conditions, driven largely by El Niño.

This climate shift brings erratic monsoons, severe dry spells, and heightened public health risks, including waterborne illnesses and dengue fever. In low-lying regions like Sindh, the risks are particularly complex, spanning from coastal waterlogging to agricultural droughts that hurt crop yields.

To protect our homes and livelihoods, we need to focus on proactive solutions like building resilient infrastructure, improving land-use planning, and raising community awareness. Staying informed and acting on PMD guidelines promptly is something we can all do to help enhance our preparedness.
