The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) is an apex agency of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) mandated to address the impacts of climate change, and create safe and sustainable habitats that provide opportunities for prosperity and wellbeing to the communities it serves both in rural and urban contexts. Established in 2016, AKAH brings together several AKDN agencies and programmes that had

been working on habitat, disaster preparedness and humanitarian assistance since early 1990s, including Focus Humanitarian Assistance, Aga Khan Planning and Building Services, the Disaster Risk Management Initiative, and the Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan Fund for the Environment.

The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan (AKAH,P) celebrated the World Water Day and International Day of Forests with the Academia in accordance with its mission to help provide resilient and sustainable habitat to the people living in the climate affected regions of Pakistan. Chitral University and Karakoram International University of Gilgit Baltistan joined hands with AKAH,P to raise mass awareness under the European Union funded project Energy Plus implemented by The Aga Khan Foundation and its sister AKDN agencies. The project aims to provide sustainable energy sources for the people living in mountainous regions of Pakistan. Together with its key stakeholders and line departments, AKAH targeted the students to engage in various activities ranging from drawings, debate, stitching, exhibitions, speeches and panel talks featuring thematic messages to help people understand the relation of people with its environment especially with trees and water. AKAH’s messages around water and forest reached various audiences with the help of mainstream and social media. District administrations, scholars, community leaders, and teachers applauded the participants for various creative activities in both regions.

On International Mountain Day 2025, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan (AKAHP), under the Energy Plus Project, engaged female students at Government Girls Middle School Napora, Gilgit in an experiential learning activity exploring the link between mountains, glaciers, freshwater, and energy.
Through a guided hike and interactive discussions, students learned how snow-capped mountains and glaciers sustain energy, livelihoods, and daily life in mountain communities, while understanding the importance of climate action and responsible energy use.
The activity empowered students to become advocates of energy efficiency, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Concluding an exceptional year of community development, resilient construction, emergency management, and climate-responsive interventions, Chairman Board of Directors Mr. Faisal Noorali Lalani along with board members Mr. Rizwan Karim, Mr. Rahim Khaimani, Mr. Muhammad Afzal, Ms. Shakila Anjum, Chief Executive Officer Ms Nusrat Nasab and the regional leadership of the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan (AKAHP), conducted a comprehensive field visit to Chitral, Ghizer, Gilgit, and Hunza from December 11 to 14, 2025. The mission of the visit was to underscore AKAHP’s steadfast commitment to community resilience, disaster preparedness, and flood mitigation across northern Pakistan.
The Board of Directors, and the leadership commenced the visit with engagements at the AKAHP Chitral office, including meetings with staff and the Regional Council President. The team conducted detailed inspections of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the Search and Rescue Teams (SART), and the regional stockpile facilities. Under the guidance of Regional Program Manager, Mr. Wali Khan field visits included green construction and retrofitting initiatives, such as a Community Centre, a Government Girls High School, and a Diagnostic Centre in Lower Chitral, while in Upper Chitral, the team visited the Booni Community Centre, a mitigation site, and the AKAHP office, observing first hand the Agency’s interventions in form of resilient infrastructure and community safety.
The Chairman with the members of BOD and the leadership then proceeded to Ghizer and Gilgit, where they engaged with community representatives and local councils along with Regional Program Manager Gilgit Dr. Nazir Ahmed, assessing post-flood recovery and mitigation efforts. The delegation conducted a soft inauguration of the Badswath cluster housing project in Immit Valley, Ishkoman, and engaged directly with community members to understand their needs and challenges. Visits to community centres and interactions with the Regional Council President over dinner further reinforced AKAHP’s participatory approach to development. In Gilgit, the leadership also visited project sites including Sultanabad and Sonikot Jamat Khana development initiatives and conducted aerial reconnaissance of flood-affected areas such as Talli Das and Dayin, highlighting the Agency’s focus on disaster risk reduction and environmental monitoring.
The delegation in Hunza, accompanied by the Regional Council President, undertook aerial reconnaissance of Shishper, Gulmit, and Passu Glaciers, underlining the importance of glacier monitoring for disaster preparedness. Field visits included disaster affected areas in Gulmit, mitigation initiatives and Janabad Jamat Khana in Passu. Additionally Board of Director's meetings allowed for strategic discussions on operational learnings, project implementation, and long-term planning.
The Board of Directors and senior leadership of AKAHP, through their visit, showcased the vision, dedication, and hands-on commitment that continue to drive resilient, community-focused solutions across northern Pakistan.

At Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan (AKAHP), volunteers stand at the heart of community resilience and emergency response, expressed our head of emergency management Ejaz Karim at a panel discussion held in honour of all the volunteers on International Volunteers Day 2025 upon the topic, “role of volunteers in creating a sustainable Pakistan”. He further emphasised that from supporting disaster preparedness to responding during climate-induced emergencies, volunteers play a critical role in protecting lives, strengthening local capacities, and promoting sustainable practices across Pakistan.

The held panel talk invited key stake holders and was organised by Voluntary Services Overseas V.S.O. in collaboration with the Prime Minister Youth Programme P.M.Y.P. and its partner Bargad, held on International Volunteers Day, December 11, 2025. The event aimed to honour the invaluable contributions of volunteers and foster dialogue on how volunteer-led action can drive climate resilience nationwide.

To ensure safer dwelling alternatives amid earthquakes and harsh winters, the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan, with the support of generous donors UKAID and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), extended assistance to vulnerable households in the Chupursan Valley. Through this collaboration, 195 winter kits were distributed to households, complementing the shelters provided by AKAHP during times of emergency.

AKAH Pakistan celebrated International Volunteers Day with a heartfelt Appreciation Event at the Aga Khan Gymkhana Ground, Karachi, bringing together over 150 CERT, SART, and DART volunteers from parts of Karachi and Interior Sindh, alongside Regional and Local Council Leadership and PASC Leadership.

We were honored to welcome Mr. Amyn Hussain Tejany, President Council for the Southern Region, as Chief Guest, along with Mr. Faisal Noorali Lalani, Chairman of the AKAHP Board of Directors.

Both leaders shared powerful reflections on volunteerism and expressed deep gratitude for the volunteers’ courageous service, especially during emergencies. CERT members also shared inspiring firsthand experiences from emergency responses in 2025 and were recognized with certificates and tokens of appreciation for their dedication. Together, we celebrate the spirit of service that keeps our communities safer and stronger.

AKAH Pakistan is participating in the Disaster Early Warning Expo 2025, organized by NDMA, where innovators, policymakers, and technology leaders are coming together to advance early warning and resilience solutions for a safer, smarter Pakistan.

At the exhibition, AKAHP is showcasing knowledge materials on the importance of Community Based Early Warning Systems (EWS) in disaster preparedness and response, while the team highlights powerful success stories from recent floods where AKAH-installed Community Based EWS helped save hundreds of lives.

With 16 Community Based Early Warning Systems now installed in high-risk areas across Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, AKAH continues to strengthen community resilience through technology.

In the poster competition, AKAH experts from Gilgit and Chitral presented their achievements through detailed maps and models, reinforcing the critical role of EWS and technology in protecting communities from climate-induced disasters.
